Southermost, an historic home built in 1929, is one of the most unique private homes in the Southern Overberg. Located on the sea front and sharing a boundary with the Agulhas National Park, Southermost is the southernmost private home on the continent of Africa.
Included in the rate is a light self-serve vegetarian breakfast.
Please note that our ablution facilities are not en suite. However, the shower room and the toilet - across an open courtyard - are for our guests' private use.
Southermost is a historic home and the southernmost private residence on the continent of Africa. Just a 10-minute walk from Southermost will take you to the exact place where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. The demarcation of the oceans is cast in stone, since it is a ruling by the International Hydrographic Organisation of which South Africa is a member. Currents change constantly and fluctuate between the cold Benguela Current from the southern Atlantic Ocean and the warm Agulhas Current from the Indian Ocean.
Our double room has twin beds to cater for many of our visitors who are travelling partners and not couples. The shower room and toilet - across a quiet, open courtyard - are for our guests' use exclusively but are not situated en suite. Furthermore, a cosy reading room is equipped with amenities such as a kettle, fridge and choice of teas and coffees. Plates and cutlery are also provided for a quick snack. A delight to many of our visitors is our indigenous fynbos garden, created through years of work by the owners. A rustic garden bench, available to guests, provides an ideal space for guests to enjoy an evening drink or their breakfast next morning.
On occasion, we are willing to accommodate parties of 3 or 4 by making a second double bedroom inside the main house available. All in the group share the same ablution facilities, which are outside the main house. If you are interested in this option, please message Meg.
Interaction with guests
We are always extremely happy to share any information with guests or to help them with queries regarding itineraries, and important places to visit. We are available from 06h00 until 21h00 to offer any assistance to guests.
Other things to note
Southermost is an historic home, and the structure is controlled by the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA). We are required to maintain Southermost as an original Southern Overberg beach house. For this reason, the shower room and toilet are not en suite. They are, however, for the exclusive use of our guests.
A light breakfast – consisting of juice, fresh seasonal fruit, a selection of cereals, yoghurt and locally made 'rusks' – is laid out for guests each morning. Tea and filter coffee are also available.
Smoking is not permitted anywhere on our property, not even in the fynbos garden. Furthermore, in order to retain an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity, we request that guests use their mobile phones privately and with discretion.

I am passionate about indigenous gardening, puzzles, and doing hard manual renovation work on our historic family home. In winter I visit my children and grandchildren who have all emigrated to Australia and New Zealand.
We open Southermost B&B in October each year and look forward to welcoming our wonderful international guests who are always fascinated with the unique architecture, tranquil atmosphere, and the aesthetic and ethical environmental values of Southermost.
Our policy here at Southermost is to do whatever we can in order to tread lightly on this, our beleaguered planet.
