Overlooking the Danube, away from the noisy tourist hassle, in Vác, just 30 minutes from the centre of Budapest: spacious 3 room apartment, ideal for families and those who want to combine a city trip to the beautiful capital of Hungary with nature walks and relaxing in the garden.

The space

In the charming baroque town of Vác, just half an hour by train from the center of the beautiful Hungarian capital of Budapest we offer a spacious, self-catering two bedroom holiday apartment with separate living room, kitchen and one bathroom and with views on a quiet and tree-shaded promenade and park and on the Danube river.

The apartment is situated on the ground floor of our house and has a separate entrance. The accommodation, which sleeps two to six people, is also well-suited for parents with children. It has a large bedroom with a double bed, a smaller bedroom with two single beds as well as a living room with a sofa that can be converted to a double bed. The apartment has central heating, but in the living room, you will also find a traditional Hungarian masonry heater.
A baby cod and a highchair are available. We also provide games and toys like Lego, badminton and jeu de boulle available for people who travel with kids.

The apartment offers ADSL-cable, free WiFi and a TV plus DVD player with a collections of DVD's. There is also a well filled book case with Dutch and English books and books on Budapest and Hungary. The separated kitchen is fully equipped with fridge, coffee machine, a double hotplate, and microwave. The bathroom has a shower and there is a washing machine. Guests are invited to use the secluded garden and the barbecue facilities behind the house.

Vác is situated on the banks of the Danube River. The town is the perfect place for those who want to combine a visit to one of Europe's most beautiful cities with more leisurely holiday activities. The centre of Budapest is just half an hour by train. The main train station is a ten minutes walking from the apartment, and trains run from 05.30 AM till 00.48 AM. By car, the city center takes three quarters of an hour. To the south of Vác, the Danube riverbanks are part of the Danube-Ipoly National Park. It's a paradise bird watchers. The neighboring Börzsöny Mountains National Park offer lots of hiking possibilities. Along the Danube in front of the house passes the Passau-Budapest cycling road, and we offer bicycles for rent to our guests.
Vác itself is a charming little town of 30,000 inhabitants. The baroque main square, just around the corner, has been extensively renovated. You will find some very picturesque historical buildings as well as several restaurants, cafes, and coffeehouses (including a superb chocolate place). There are also several small museums, most interesting probably the exhibition of the mummies of Vác; the almost fully preserved remains of local citizens from the 18th century and their beautifully hand-painted coffins. In summer, there are regular open air performances on the square, ranging from classical concerts and folk dance to pop music. Nearby is also a daily market, where peasants from the surrounding villages sell their produce. The local open air swimming pool is just one minute from the house.

We are both foreign correspondents, working in Hungary, and we have written guides about Budapest and the country (in Dutch). We can provide you with lots of information and we can borrow you maps and other useful materials. If you are interested, we can also organize guided tours in Budapest (and Vác). We speak Dutch, English, German, some French, and Hungarian

Guest access

Private entrance, use of garden, barbecue, up to four bicycles for rent. Two bicycles are always available, the other two in consultation. There is also some bicycles suitable for (not too small) children.

Interaction with guests

As Runa has written a book on Budapest and Henk a guide for Hungary, we are happy to give you advice. We also organise tours in Budapest, if you are interested. We are always open to chat, but respect your privacy if you don't feel up to conversation.

Other things to note

In the third or fourth weekend of July, there is a local festival in Vác, with performances ranging form classical concerts and jazz to folk and pop. There are many other activities as well. The festival is very nice, but of course, it also creates the necessary bustle. If you want to book during that period and you think it would disturb you, please inquire with us when the festival takes place, as the exact date varies.

Loved our stay here. Runa and Henk are great and the place is nice. You will enjoy a stay in Vac - great view looking out on the Danube and a perfect cycle path along the river to rent a bike and go for a cycle! Runa and Henk are a terrific source of info about places to visit and things to do.

This is a wonderful apartment that has a historic feel and overlooks the Danube. The bathroom includes a washing machine and with the wide archway right outside the door, provides a very helpful way to get some laundry washed and dried. The shower was very nice and we all had a set of towels laid out for us when we arrived. The kitchen had everything we needed including a spacious refrigerator. The living room and master bedroom both face the front of the building and overlook the Danube. Nice breezes come through the front front windows and with the window in the kitchen, you experience a nice cross breeze. It was in the mid-90s when we were there so those features plus the two fans were much appreciated and made our stay comfortable. We highly recommend this apartment when visiting in Vac!

Really good location right on the Danube. The kitchen is a bit outdated and not so good if you want to cook a meal, but the rooms are spacious and there is a lovely garden to relax in. Vac is a great town with a lot of charm, easy access to Budapest but feels far away from the bustle of a city and there are lots of things to do in the town and surrounding area.

Response from Runa:
Thanks Joanna. Regarding the kitchen, it is not for cooking a meal with several courses, but we had many guests cooking normal meals without a problem. There are two electrical cooking tops, a microwave and a fair selections of bowls, pots and pans in different sizes, as well as all the necessary spoons, cooking knifes, cutlery and plates. As well as a barbecue in the garden and, at least in summer, a huge selection of fresh herbs, if anybody wants to use them. But as restaurants in Vác are really cheap, most guests actually go out for diner.

I'm a Dutch journalist, working in Hungary as a correspondent for Dutch newspapers. My husband Henk Hirs is also Dutch and also a journalist. He is editor in chief of a tourist magazine, Where Budapest. Apart from that, he sometimes reports for Dutch radio. While I have written a book about Budapest (in Dutch), Henk published a travel guide on Hungary (also in Dutch). We have been in the country since 1990, and as correspondents, we not only report on tourism, but on Hungary in general. We also organize city walks (and bicycle tours) in Budapest. We live together with our two cats and our dog, Gaia (the animals are not allowed into the apartment, by the way).
The first time we walked into our house, we fell in love with the place. It had everything we could wish for: in front a lovely view over the Danube river, in the back an equally lovely garden, a historic town centre with cafés and restaurants just minutes away (but not so close by that you can hear their noise), as well as great nature in the vicinity and very easy access to Budapest. The apartment that we rent out is in the building at the ground floor and our guests generally feel the same about the place, we noticed. We love renting out the apartment. It has brought us in touch with many nice and interesting people.
For those who read Dutch: follow our blog boedapest op maat for tourist tips. Or watch our videos on Hungary, in English on youtube (boedapest op maat). Not yet an enormous collection, but it will hopefully grow.
