Beautiful and walkable

Guests say this area is scenic and it’s easy to get around.
Your family will be close to everything when you stay at this centrally-located place. The Old Oil House is located right in the heart of Boscastle, with its picturesque harbour, village shops, pubs and tea rooms steps away from your front door. The spacious apartment occupies the ground floor of this 150 year old building and retains the original beams while having a modern feel. There is also an allocated parking space - gold dust in the summer months! Dog friendly too!

The space
We have a lovely, very conveniently laid out cottage just moments from the harbour. The property has a dedicated private parking space, is moments from shops, pubs, cafes and the National coast path.

There are no steps in the property and everything is on one level, on the ground floor.

The oil house will be underwent a full refurbishment in April 2023, with a new kitchen, new bathroom, and redecoration throughout.

Guest access
The space is all for guests, and guests only. Access is via a key box, at the guest’s convenience.

Steve helps looks after guests and can reached on the phone, if you have any questions during your stay. Steve lives only a few doors away.

We have left user guides for all items: the TV, speaker system, electric radiators, hot water, microwave, kettle, and toaster.

All bedding, linen and towels are provided and will be laundered after guests leave. If you would like to go to the beach, we ask that you bring your own towels for this.

If you have any questions before your booking, please do ask.

Other things to note
We would be most grateful if you could park perpendicular to the wall, and not parallel to the wall by the allocated parking space. That is, the front or back of the car facing the wall rather than the drivers side or passenger side door facing the wall. This helps make sure our friends and neighbours at 1B have adequate space to park.
Our friends at 1B have the first space, which is on the left as you look at the parking area from the right.
To the right hand side our friends from the Bridge House B and B often park. They have a blue pick up truck. There should always be ample space to park in our spot - including 4x4s and vans.

Laundry and energy costs are sky high, so to keep costs affordable for guests (and us) we now provide one bath towel per booked person. A washing machine and drying rack is available for those guests staying longer.

We’re not wired up or Pat tested for EV vehicles charged by a cable through the window so I am afraid you are not able to do this.

We are a strictly non-smoking property, both inside and out. We share the cobbled street right outside the front door with other properties. If you chose to smoke, please do so well away from the cottage - not outside the front door.

Please close the skylight windows when you go out.

NB, friends are of course welcome to visit.

For pets or for overnight stays of additional guests - for insurance purposes - they are required to be booked in advance through the app. If it’s short notice you can of course amend your booking through the app. Dogs are not allowed in bedrooms.

The stove is an electric one, rather than a log burner. Logs are in the basket for ornamental use.

Neighbourhood highlights

Reasons to visit Boscastle:

* The distinctive natural harbour.
* Beautiful surrounding countryside and coastline, including the South West Coastal path.
* Museum of Witchcraft
* Associated with authors and artists, including Thomas Hardy, who was inspired by its remoteness and rugged beauty.
* Abundant in wildlife, dramatic walks and historic features.
* Great potteries, pubs, and art galleries.

Things to do in Boscastle:

The landscape, coastline and quaint old buildings are undoubtedly the biggest attraction of the local area. These are made all the more interesting with local potteries, art galleries and the Museum of Witchcraft. Also nearby is sacred site St Nectan’s Glen where the River Trevillet has created a magnificent 60 foot waterfall cascading into a beautiful valley.

The area also has a number of gorgeous churches, most dating from Norman times and there are plenty of good walks into the beautiful countryside that start in the village.

Surfing and beaches

Boscastle has a small beach at low tide. Good for swimming.
Bosinney Cove is a great surfing beach and five mins drive from the cottage. There are no lifeguards, and this is a beach to use outside of high tide. There is a 10 min walk down a track to get there.
Crackington Haven is close - 10 mins drive - and has great surf, a decent beach at low tide, rock pools, caves and lifeguards. There are a couple of good cafes, a great pub, and parking is usually ok.
Polzeath. A massive beach, with amazing surf, and lots of walks along the coastal path. Get there early. 20 mins drive away. As this is close to Rock (a posh spot) the cafes and pubs are a bit more expensive. Save money by taking a packed lunch with you, get there early and enjoy the beach. Low tide is best.

Walking

Following in the footsteps of famous Thomas Hardy by taking the path through the woods and up the valley to St Juliot’s Church. See the Old Rectory where Hardy stayed and met his sweetheart Emma whilst he was an architect working on the church tower

For fantastic coastal views take the left hand path at the harbour that leads to a slate platform where out you can see the Boscastle ‘Blowhole’ an hour before or after low tide.

The blow-hole beneath Pengally Point is often called Devil’s Bellows. It can be seen thumping and snorting an hour either side of low tide, blowing horizontal water across the harbour entrance if the conditions are right. You can follow the path up to the 300ft high Willa Park, where the National Coastwatch have a watch house. The Willa Park walk is doable with young children (we managed it with a four year old), and you may even see the ‘wild’ ponies who graze up by the watch tower. (Don’t worry, they are very friendly).

The National Trust visitor centre by the harbour has an extensive gift shop, tea rooms and lots of local visitor information.

About a mile out of Boscastle is a farm shop. This has a lovely cafe, and sells a range of great farm produce (meat, vegetables, breads, beer, cider, etc). It is also a fantastic point at which to start a walk as it adjoins the South West Coastal Path. The cafe displays a number of excellent circular walks of varying length.
