About this listing

Spacious, elegant, comfortable bedroom in a beautiful up-country home. A quiet, private place to land and depart from for your Maui adventures. Mostly looking for guests who just want a really nice place to sleep. Coffee and tea provided :-)

The space

This is a spacious bedroom in a beautiful up-country home. Comfy queen size bed, lots of room to stretch out. Wifi, plus HDTV with NetFlix and HBO GO. We're calling it a "crash pad", because we're only looking for guests who come in after dinner, only need a place to sleep, clean up, and head out early the next day for Maui Adventures. The host works at home and is here most of the time and needs her living/working area to be uninterrupted from at least 9am-5:30pm each day.
Please note - we have a very friendly, indoor only cat. You can certainly close off your bedroom door, but there will be a cat in the rest of the house.
We ask a very small cleaning fee ($20) to cover utilities, no security deposit, and we do accept one night stays. In exchange, we ask that you honor the "crash pad" style of living and not hang out in the host's general living quarters or use the kitchen for more than making some coffee or tea in the morning. Worth noting: there is one full flight of stairs from the parking area to the bedroom area. If you canʻt carry your luggage up a flight of stairs, this might not be the right listing for you. We ask that you read ALL the details in this section to make sure this listing is right for you.

Guest access

Guests will have access to the bathroom and kitchen, but we prefer you keep your kitchen activities to a minimum. Our ideal guests donʻt need to cook here, and need only a small space to store anything in the fridge. We provide a coffee maker with filters and some nice coffee as well as organic green tea. This is a non-dairy household, so we provide almond milk, but you'll have to bring your own "real" milk/cream. Thereʻs a lovely deck youʻre welcome to use when the weather supports it.
Host shares the bathroom, and won't hog it, and will appreciate you being considerate in that same regard.
Also, we very much appreciate you waiting till you go outside before applying perfume, cologne or even a scented after shave. Sensitive noses live here, and those scents tend to linger in the house for hours. Thank you for your consideration in this regard.

Interaction with guests

Pamela is an experienced "Super Host" and will want to make sure you are comfortable and have everything you need for a perfect stay. But she works at home and won't have time for lengthy interaction with guests. That's why we're calling this a "crash pad". It's a place for you to come and crash at the end of the day, shower, sleep in comfort and quiet, but not a whole house share. Thank you for respecting that.

Other things to note

Some of our guests arrive late and/or leave early. We simply ask that you be consciously quiet both inside and outside the house from 9pm to 7am. Mahalo!
If you leaving for sunrise at the summit of Haleakalā, Pamela might ask that you park on the street to give a little relief to our neighbors whose bedrooms are close to our driveway. This is something we can discuss upon your arrival. The street is VERY quiet, safe, with very little traffic.
Also worthy of note - the cat box for our adorable cat lives in the shower. We use pine pellets for litter, so the cat box is not at all smelly. But it does have to be removed when you take a shower. Pamela will be willing to do this for you if she's home. But if you take a shower when Pamela is not home, you'll have to remove the cat box and then put it back when you're done showering.
And one last thing, sorry for being so long winded, but AirBnB has asked me to mention this next thing, because it does come up occasionally. The listed price for this room is for one or two people *sleeping in the same bed*. I DO have a portable single bed I can set up for people who would like to sleep separately, but there is an extra charge. The charge shows up automatically if the listing is for three or more people, but it does not show up if itʻs only two people, and yet you want the extra bed set up. I can add this charge ($25) as a "special offer", so just let me know if itʻs something you want upon booking inquiry. Thereʻs NO extra charge for two people sleeping in the queen size master bed.
Pamelaʻs house is a fully licensed BnB.

#1 House Rule: DO NOT LET THE CAT OUT!!!
We have an adorable Siamese/Burmese blend cat. He's incredibly social and will love you if you want to be loved, and leave you alone if you're not a cat person. But he is INDOOR ONLY. Please be very conscious when going in and out of ANY door in the house - ie, front door, or any door to the deck or carport.
We also not only ask for no smoking, we ask that you not book this listing if you are a smokER. We've had uncomfortable experiences with cigarette odor in our home. Please respect this request and don't book if you're a smoker. Thank you.
All the other house rules are about bathroom behavior - as stated earlier, please wait till you go outside to apply perfume, cologne or even aftershave.
Host will appreciate you drying off IN the shower so you donʻt drip all over the bathroom rug, hang your wet towels in the bathroom, not the bedroom, and wipe splashed water off the counter top. Lastly, the bathroom door needs to be left OPEN when youʻre not in that room, so both Pamela and HoneyBoy know when the bathroom is available for their use. Mahalo!

The house was very clean. The house has a cat, but the cat does not go to the rented room. The place is the closest place you will find near Haleakala. So, if you are planning on doing Haleakala Sunrise, this place is great. The house is facing a very beautiful face of the Pu Kukui. The house is in a residential area. So, evening hours are quiet hours. Pamela was a great host. She communicated very well. She gave us lots of detail about the place as well as the area. She was also very generous. We missed a night due to a flight issue. She gave us a partial refund for that day, which by rules she didn't have to.

Thank you, Sudip. You and Allie were great guests, and I was delighted to host you. For people reading Sudipʻs review - he stayed in my "Elegant Kula Crash Pad", which is part of my personal home, and the only one of my listings that has a cat :-) Kula Treat and Kula Jewel are both pet free zones. Sudip and Allie, youʻll always be welcome here. Aloha!

Pamela welcomed us as soon as we arrived and gave us a great tour of her home showing us everything we needed and we were able to get a good nights sleep before getting up to watch the sunrise at Haleakala. Pamela's place was great for being close to the National Park as we went up to the Crater for sunset (which we highly recommend). Pamela was great with her communication and directions. We appreciated her recommendations for timings and restaurant, we followed them to a tee! Pamela was very strict with her rules and quizzed us on them when we got in. We felt like most of them were common sense things that we would have done a great but we understand she may have had other guests that have not done things in the past (like being clean and tidy in the bathroom for instance). Although pamela was lovely and accomodating, we felt very self conscious like we may get in trouble for doing anything wrong, such as wheeling the bag inside, where to park, what to use in the kitchen and bathroom etc. All of these things were fine but it's important to understand you are entering a strict household which she does make clear with her house rules.

Response from Pamela:
I always appreciate it when guests read my listing description, and I want to be very clear that Odette stayed my "Elegant Kula Crash Pad", not at Kula Treat or Kula Jewel. Neither of those listing have "strict" house rules, because they are stand alone properties, where the guest has the whole place to themselves. But Odette stayed in my residence, shared my bathroom, my kitchen, etc., so yes, I do have stricter house rules for that listing. I sorry this guest felt "self conscious". I appreciated them more than one time, saying I would be giving them a five star review, which I did.

Pamela is simply amazing. She met us at the street, which was so nice as it was very dark when we arrived. She was also specific and clear with her expectations for us as guests, which I appreciated.

Iʻm a professional musician and voice teacher. I live on Maui because I love the beauty, the quiet, the ocean and all its creatures. Iʻm blessed with good health, and great friends and a truly beautiful home.

I've been deeply involved with Hawaiian culture for the last 20+ years, studying the language, music, crafts and hula.
I also teach ‘ukulele, and some of my guests have taken lessons with me while staying at Kula Treat.

I love hosting travelers because I think my home, and the area where I live, give visitors a true sense of what itʻs like to live on Maui - away from the touristy areas. My style of hosting is to show my guests everything they'll need, (how to use the tv or hot tub, for instance, where coffee and teas are stored, etc.), and then leave them to their privacy. At the same time, I'm generally available for questions or anything my guests might need for their comfort, if it's not already presented.

Come experience Maui with Kula Jewel, or Kula Treat (my two listings) as your home base.
E komo mai! (Welcome!)

ps Iʻm very pleased to announce that both my listings are fully permitted by Maui County, and any reservation you make with me will be legal and secure. Woo hoo!!
