This circa 1820 farm house is appointed with all the trappings to make your stay both a federal period reminder and a comfortable modern experience. Your hosts have imagined a myriad of things you may want to see, experience, or explore and you will be hard-pressed to delve too deeply into it all. Depending on the season, you may be invited to tap maple trees, tend honey bees, plant vegetables, harvest fruit, help with pickling, jamming, butchering, poultry care, or winter holiday baking.

The space
This is a 200 year old home with all the charm and frustrations that come with it. Fortunately, your hosts have added plenty of contemporary amenities to make your homestead experience both fascinating and comfortable. You choose how much of any activity you want to participate in and quiet observation is just as welcome as rolled up sleeves. We have a library of rare anthropology and archeology books as well as modern reading to keep the bibliophile in you on its toes and plenty of comfortable quiet spaces to enjoy your solitude should you chose.

The booking of this listing includes use of the entire Brick House Farmstead. See our other listings for single room rental options. There are five bedrooms and three bathrooms available for your accommodation. Please indicate your dates and what type of experience you’re looking for and your hosts will coach you through the details and negotiate pricing, cleaning fees, and “extras” that may be available depending on the season and the natural ebb and flow of farm life.

All guests have access to the common areas of the house, farm, and surrounding property for the duration of their booking. Host Eric takes care of the day-to-day operations around the farm, so you will likely get to enjoy some “yarn-spinning” during your stay.

Where you’ll be

Essex, New York, United States

Brick House Farm is in the center of the Champlain Valley farm Renaissance area. Many local farms have recently been purchased and restored to agricultural production by scores of new and young farmers returning to the land. It’s truly a remarkable transformation to someone who was raised on a farm here and witnessed the decline of our agricentric community. The Essex County Fair in nearby Westport, NY was once upon a time the highlight of the agriculture year and supported local families by bringing Cornell ag sciences and home economics to the community. Now, sadly, the historic landmark buildings are targeted for demolition to make way for more efficient and modern utilization. But, the Hamlets of Wadhams, Boquet, Essex, and Whallonsburgh are pulsing with new-found energy and social opportunity…not to be missed!

During your stay

This is an active farm so we will be performing required work and chores accordingly. We will keep intrusion into your space to a minimum and if you’ve rented out the entire home, we will only go inside with your permission or in an emergency. We will access the basement, however, regardless of your rental arrangement. Many guests are curious to help out around the farm. If this sounds like you then make sure to let us know and we’ll include you in what we can. Host Eric is resident.
