Great location

Located in the high desert mesa of Taos, NM, this funky, artistic earthship is a unique gem in the Greater World, a mecca for off-grid living.

We take pride in giving a true earthship experience to our guests... a vacation spot that feels like home. Enjoy an eclectic collection of handmade art pieces, local products from the Taos farmer’s market and Co-Op, and an abundant indoor greenhouse.

Come stay for a weekend, a week, a month... or longer!

The space
This earthship is a rare split-level model designed and built by Michael Reynolds and crew in 2001. It is unique in its design among earthship models, and blends aesthetics, functionality, and practicality together in a completely off-grid and self-sustaining vessel. It is constructed of roughly 40% recycled materials (tires, cans, bottles, cardboard), and many other materials were sourced locally or on-site. It acts as a spiritual or nature retreat, a home base for travel around New Mexico and Colorado, or a comfortable and reliable location to work remotely.

The kitchen is stocked with a stove/oven, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, and other appliances, as well as cooking and eating hardware plus a basic supply of oils, spices, condiments, and other cooking products. Artisan teas and coffees are provided, though dairy products/creamers generally are not.

Water is provided by catching rainwater from the roof, filtering it up to four times before delivering to the sinks or drinking water tap. Given that Taos only receives 7 to 9 inches of rain per year, conscientious and conservative water use on your part is requested and appreciated. Hot water is delivered via a rooftop solar batch water heater, though the amount of available hot water is usually very limited.

Solar panels provide an abundance of electricity to power Wi-Fi, phones and computers, the refrigerator and cooking appliances, and more. Propane is provided for stove and oven cooking. Feel free to use these resources as you please, or the entire power system can be turned off for a complete detox (refrigerator, water pump, and some lights will still work via stored DC battery power).

Heating and cooling are provided primarily by thermal mass, solar gain, and convection, meaning there is no active A/C, and heat is only provided by a small wood stove. Proper air flow and window shading cools the home during warm months and traps heat during cool months. Opening and closing doors, skyvents, and the blinds, as well as electric fans, control the temperature.

Internet access is fast enough to stream videos or music, so working remotely is a possibility. Please keep in mind that since you are in a remote, off-grid setting, the Wi-Fi can slow or have problems during inclement weather, though that is rare. Cell reception is minimal, so texting and Wi-Fi calling is recommended.

The upper level acts as the bedroom, and has a king bed, yoga/meditation area, washing machine, plenty of storage, and a variety of decorative plants in the window box planter. Just outside the bedroom door is the outdoor shower, which is fenced off for privacy. The lower level includes the kitchen, bathroom, living area, indoor vegetable garden, and a smart TV with Netflix.

A propane grill and outdoor furniture allow for cooking and dining outside. On the upper level above the yard is a “beach” with lounge chairs and a funky mural project as the backdrop. Paints and brushes are provided in case you want to contribute to the mural or work on art projects of your own.

Handmade, local, unique, and weird art pieces abound throughout the earthship -- from paintings to pottery and more -- and most of them are for sale or trade. If a particular piece speaks to you, feel free to ask your host about purchasing it.

I came to Taos not expecting to stay, but fell in love with the mesa and with earthships. Now I’m glad to be able to offer this experience to others through airbnb.
