Where you’ll be

Qualicum Beach, British Columbia, Canada

Qualicum Beach is a wonderful oceanfront town with an English heritage just north of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, BC. Rich in culture and the arts.

Qualicum's 'downtown' or what is otherwise referred to as 'the village' hosts a unique mix of shops, bookstores, cafes, restaurants and art galleries. Home to a wide variety of artists including many renowned Canadian painters, weavers, sculptors, carvers, glass blowers and other artisans. Take in the picturesque town and salty air while meandering through the streets in a place where the trend towards 'big box' stores does not exist.

Many theater productions and festivals are put on all year round.

Qualicum Beach visitors have access to miles of scenic hiking trails, excellent dining opportunities and miles of shoreline that beachcombers only dream about.

Stop in for a night on your way to or from Tofino, or avoid the high cost of West Coast accommodations and day trip to Ucluelet or Tofino - only a scenic 2 hour drive away.

Some things to do and see while you are here:

Browse and Shop at Coombs Old Country Market, known locally and internationally as 'Goats on the Roof'. Starting as a roadside stand in 1973 and went on to become a full-fledged marketplace that attracts thousand of visitors every year. A marketplace where you can purchase local and international foods, local produce, and locally made and imported gifts. The market also has a restaurant, deli, bakery and ice cream shop. And of course, there are the goats on the roof. This one-of-a-kind experience is a must-do when visiting Qualicum Beach.

Check out the local Arts scene at the Old School House Arts Centre, a heritage building that is home to 3 galleries featuring monthly exhibitions by B.C. Artists. The Gift Shop showcases over 100 Vancouver Island Craftspeople and paintings by top Local Artists. Daily: Watch 15 Resident Artists practice their craft, painting, pottery, jewellery, and photography.
Weekly: September-April, "Music On Sunday", afternoons, mulit-genre concerts.
Monthly: May-August, "Music On Sunday", evenings.

The Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach is a good place for live theatre enthusiasts as it offers shows both in winter and summer. Most of these productions are created by resident ECHO players.

Grab your clubs and check out the seven Golf Courses in the area including Fairwinds, Qualicum Beach Memorial, Eaglecrest, Arrowsmith, Pheasant Glen, Morningstar, and Brigadoon.

A great way to spend your Saturday morning - Qualicum Beach Farmers Market opens every Saturday morning from 8:30 am to noon. Local farmers have a cornucopia of fresh produce, meats, fish, flowers, jams, pickles, preserves and fresh baked breads and cakes for your enjoyment, while other vendors display tasteful touches of crafts and artwork. Located at Veterans Way & Memorial in Qualicum Beach. Enjoy the freshest produce and food and enjoy our live music and consider stopping at the Legion for a pancake breakfast.

Visit Morningstar Farm, home to Little Qualicum Cheeseworks and Moo Berry Winery, is a local food hub featuring self-guided tours, a farmgate store & seasonal "calfé", a petting farm, trails, and Canada's first "milk on tap" dispenser. Open daily, year-round. Open 9 - 6 daily for self-guided tours and cheese & wine tasting. Cafe open 10-5

Vancouver Island University's Deep Bay Field Station at the southern end of Baynes Sound on Vancouver Island is a green design facility which promotes and showcases practical applications of alternative technologies for energy and water usage. This unique green facility and Science Center has been designed to host a wide variety of public activities including guided and self-guided tours, school groups, meetings, conferences, small or large catered events and weddings.

Check out our local marinas and all they have to offer. Deep Bay Harbour has a beautiful mountain backdrop and is great for viewing birds and other sea creatures. The Schooner Cove Marina on Nanoose's Peninsula is in a unique, rocky setting, perfect for wildlife viewing.

Go for a swim at Ravensong Aquatic Centre which is an award-winning facility providing swimming lessons, first aid and aquatic leadership courses. 25-metre main pool with whirlpool, leisure pool, dry sauna and steam room. Or grab your suit and take a dip or paddle a canoe on one of the many lakes including Cameron Lake, Spider Lake, and Horne Lake Regional Park.

Visit Milner Gardens, a 70 acre seaside attraction is a ten minute walk or a short drive awayMeander through 10 acres of lush gardens, surrounded by old growth forest, and after the stroll, enjoy a traditional English Tea and take in the history of the house where Queen Elizabeth once stayed. This spectacular property is perched on the edge of a bluff that opens to expansive views of the Strait of Georgia.

Take a stroll through stands of trees over 300 years, found in the 500 acres of Coastal Douglas fir forest, which is protected by the Heritage Forest of Qualicum Beach. Every year, thousands of visitors walk the undisturbed bark mulch of the forest and are in wonder at the pure wilderness.

Visit Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park which straddles the scenic Little Qualicum River, west of Parksville. Impressive waterfalls cascade and plummet down a rocky gorge in a beautiful forest setting. Perhaps the most magnificent park on Vancouver Island, Little Qualicum Falls incorporates the entire southern shore of Cameron Lake, adjacent to MacMillan Provincial Park and the awesome Cathedral Grove Rainforest. Cameron Lake is bordered by steep mountains: Mt. Wesley to the north and Mt. Arrowsmith to the south.
Another great scenic hike is Englishman River Falls. Located near Errington, just a short drive from Parksville and Qualicum Beach, this is one of the prettiest BC Parks on Vancouver Island, with camping, picnic areas, swimming and hiking, and two spectacular waterfalls in the midst of the forest. During the summer a crystal clear pool at the base of the lower falls turns into one of the best swimming holes in the area, and the whole park becomes a prime viewing area for the return of spawning salmon in the fall.

A hike at the historic Arrowsmith CPR Regional Trail. The trail was built in 1912 by the Canadian Pacific Railway to service guests at its Cameron Lake Resort. It winds uphill from Highway 4 through private forest lands to the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District's park, which was previously a ski hill. It takes about four hours to get to the old ski hill, and about halfway up there is a fantastic view of the lush land below. The entire trail is about 10 km with an elevation gain of 1,000 meters. Park at the Cameron Lake day-use area and cross the highway to access the trailhead.

Explore Moorecroft Regional Park in Nanoose Bay, a 34 hectare park featuring Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, twisted Arbutus trees, and endangered Garry Oak. If that's not enough, add in a hike to The Notch, and end the day with a pint at a destination English pub - The Rocking Horse Pub.
