Interaction with guests
I plan to be only as interactive with you as you need me to be. I have lots of written information which you can go through at your own leisure after which I can give friendly advice and offer more help if required. I am a trained and experienced tour guide! Hopefully you will feel at home here and share times with us around food and fire. If you wish me to take you on an excursion, we can work out a budget.
Other things to note
This is a no smoking house.
This is an enviro-friendly house, so please help us save water, electricity and recycle your rubbish where possible.
If at all possible, please arrange your arrival during the week as I would like to be able to enjoy some weekends away from the house.
This is self-catering accommodation.
Friends sleeping over not allowed.
I would love you to be my next guest! Whether for a few days, several weeks or a couple of months, I'll do my best to accommodate your needs. I expect you to keep your side of the deal too and take good care of my house items and equipment and take responsibility for keeping the shared areas clean after using them.
You are welcome to come and go as you please, provided you share your initial arrival and final departure with me.
You are welcome to extend your stay with minimal notice, as long as the room is not booked by another guest.
You are kindly requested not to let anyone into our home without letting me know in advance.
You are kindly requested not to take house towels to the beach.
You are kindly requested not to smoke at our house. This is a non-smoking house.
You will meet Hazelbridge who is my little dog. She is a pug, so be warned - she's ugly (but very cute!)
I am in my 60s, happy, busy and free-spirited. My dog is my favourite friend and all-time companion. I deeply love and am proud of my two strong, beautiful daughters both in their 20s. I love mountaineering, hiking, surfing and pottering around at home. I have a passion for Rock Art and have spent years exploring the shelters in the Western Cape, finding paintings and artefacts. I am a keen botaniser and know and love the "fynbos" biome around me. I’m happiest in the mountains, hiking, climbing, camping or walking my dog on a path.
B-i-i-i-ig things in my life have been the birth of my daughters, climbing a 6000m peak in Peru, crossing the Atlantic in a yacht and being temporarily struck down by a neural disease. However, I constantly find wonder and amazement in the small things in life - watching my plants grow, listening to my pug snore, riding a glistening early morning wave, coming across an interesting shaped rock on my walks, listening to great young jazz musicians and their South African flavoured compositions...
I listen to a lot of music, especially jazz and have evolving current favourites. I am prepared to listen to any music if it pushes some boundaries or is daring or is beautiful and gives me gooseflesh.
When I read, I like non-fiction. "A Short History of Nearly Everything" reminds me that I am made of stardust and that I come from a long line of surviving ancestors, so I'd better be thankful for being given life as a human! But "Life of Pi" taught me that life is what you make of it, especially when it comes to survival. "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" taught me that there are many different ways to view and experience life.
My philosophy in life is to care for the earth and be aware of my footprint. I have grown an indigenous garden from nothing, planted many trees and grown some of my own veggies.
My special gift to travellers would be to expose those interested, in a responsible way, to the amazing paintings, some thousands of years old, hidden in the rock shelters of the Western Cape. Not many people have access to these sites. I have a slide show and video of the San or bushman "trance dance" which I show under the canopy of the southern starlit sky before we go into the field and explore. Please note though, that this is a field trip which requires some planning and at least 4 days away from Cape Town.
My other special gift is what nature provides five minutes from my house - a lovely beach and surf break - and I can introduce someone to surfing!
I'm happy to host just about anyone but particularly like people who are enthusiastic and thirsty for experience. I realise that at times that my home needs to be a quiet place for someone to recharge their batteries, so lying in the sun in a hammock or snuggling up in a cosy bed for days is also cool with me.
