Gorgeous country retreat between Burlington and Middlebury. A "dimensionally transcendental" space (bigger on the inside ;o) built as an artist's studio, located in a meadow bordered by woods and a wide creek on 22 acres, magical in all seasons.

The space

One large, 2-story room with two double beds: a bed on the main floor with a plush mattress, and a comfy futon on the sleeping loft. There's a well-equipped kitchen perfect for making romantic dinners, with new (spring 2016) fridge and commercial range. There are both electric and drip coffee set-ups, and a toaster. No microwave. A large dining table (made by a local furniture building from local wood) for the amazing dinners you'll make, or to spread out your work and find inspiration. The center of the space holds a comfy "living room" area with a new couch (spring 2016) to hang out in. The cozy bedroom corner on the main floor and the futon on the sleeping loft make for dreamy night sleeps, both have fans and windows to stay cool in the summer. The recently renovated bathroom has an antique claw-foot tub, with a removable plank "desk" for your book and glass of wine. There is a radio & CD player, and iPod/Phone hook-up, wireless internet, and a land line.

As you can see from the reviews, it's a very special place, intimate in size but expansive in feel, because of the cathedral ceiling and wall of windows with a view onto the meadow, creek, and sunset. It's a beautiful artistic/rustic interior, quirky, with a high level of comfort, many lovely rugs, and a lot of art. Perfect for an active vacation, a romantic get-away, or a creative, spiritual, or rejuvenating retreat.

Guest access

The surrounding 22 acres of land are gorgeous in all seasons. There's great snowshoeing and cross-country skiing right outside. In the warm season, hang out in the outdoor living room nestled in a White Pine woods right outside the back door or swim in the creek that borders the woods. Walk .03 mile along the road pictured above and play in the waterfall or sun on the rocks near the covered bridge. A few miles away are Lake Champlain, hiking trails, and swimming holes. Explore Burlington, Middlebury, Vergennes, and Shelburne, and try their great restaurants, museums, and shopping, all within a half hour's drive. And don't miss the famous flatbread pizza served one night a week in winter and two in summer at Pizza on Earth, on a lovely farm 5 miles away, with a stop on the way to pick up beer or the perfect bottle of wine at Spear's country store. There's lots to see and do, but you might want to snuggle in and stay put.

Interaction with guests

I am always available by text or cell. I am generally not on site when the cabin is rented, but I respond quickly by text or phone to any questions during the visit. I enjoy communicating with guests!

Other things to note

You'll also find books, CDs, Scrabble, Backgammon, and puzzles. And a lot of information on local attractions.

We loved this place to kick off our honeymoon in Vermont. It had the remoteness and rustic air of a cabin, but some nice comforts like on demand hot water, a nice bathtub, and a great updated kitchen. The property is beautiful and you can hear the brook at night when you are going to sleep. There are also many wonderful things to do and see, just a short drive away. I would definitely recommend Janie's place if you are trying to escape and relax.

This was my third time staying at Janie's and it was as wonderful as the last two times, maybe even better because of the new renovations!

Wonderful setting, beautiful view, secluded but not far from stuff to do. Had no cell service but the wifi was great. This place had a lovely slightly floral smell to it.

Janie's home was warm, unique and inspiring. We loved cooking in the kitchen, wandering in our surroundings and reading on the comfy couch. It had everything we needed for a quiet and romantic weekend!

Beautiful little treasure. We made amazing memories. Took advantage of swimming in the creek and watering hole by the little waterfall, star gazing, cooking, and campfires. There are hidden artistic touches everywhere you look. Close enough to Burlington to take advantage of shopping and night life. Can't wait to go back.

Rustic on the outside and cozy, artsy on the inside. You will love this country get away with the sloping meadow down to a beautiful creek that makes for a great cooling off spot on a hot day. Everything we needed to make dinner was there. Comfy living room for reading and listening to music. It was just what I had in mind!
