The space
ROAD TRIP!!! Keep your eyes open wide on the way to the Turquoise Door. Every angle of approach lays out iconic American landscapes. From your front door, look at a distant horizon line featuring the jagged peaks of the San Juan and West Elk ranges. Turn another direction and watch the sunset go down purple and pink and brilliant beyond the Grand Mesa. In the miles between mountains, your eyes grow sharp to see the maze of multi-layered mesas and orchards and vistas close by. There's a sense of American grandeur which comes with our big, wide open spaces. Yes, Tiny. Yes. Huge.

We highly encourage an extended visit to the area. There is so much underrated goodness to explore here! Recommendations for days and days. It is also true that The Turquoise Door is a perfect stop on the way to wherever you're headed. Simple overnights or bigger bites, you let us know.

To the inside of your humble accommodations. Your queen bed requires no steps nor ladders to reach. Despite television expectations, we've found that guests appreciate having their bed and frame at ground level. To match the TV expectations, we also feature a double bed with skylights in a loft. The setup is perfect however you'd like to play it, even and especially if your group requires more than one bed.

The bathroom is full sized and delightful. Completely on-grid utilities means instant hot water, flush toilet, and a shower more than ready for whatever you've been into all day. The kitchen is small but mighty. A two burner stove and capable toaster oven make most cooking possible. A stacked coffee/tea station and farm fresh eggs will await you for breakfast.

Combinations of sunlight give The Turquoise Door many different personalities throughout the day. Your space will lighten with the sunrise, but stay dark enough to sleep in. When you're ready for the day, open the blinds and make your space as big as your view. When night time comes, get snuggly inside, draw the blinds and go tiny again. This space fits couples, explorers and remote worker like a glove.

At night, on most nights, the Milky Way is visible. When you can see it, and you're here, and it's quiet, and you've got your person or your dog or its just you............ Boy, that's nice.

To enhance your stargazing enjoyment, you'll have a fire-pit ready for you with all the wood, kindling and matches you'll need to get started. Now you get to choose your own adventure! What's it going to be? S'mores? Smooches? Stiff drink? Maybe you just want to lose yourself for a couple hours as you shift your gaze from shining stars to smoldering embers.

Outdoor activities of some kind are almost certainly on your agenda. You're in a good spot. Thirty seconds walking brings you to a country road running parallel to the Gunnison River. Perfect for your meditative walk or jog or fly fishing cast. If you're coming for the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, this property sits right between the two entrances, about 40 minutes from both. The Grand Mesa is among the coolest geological features in the world you haven't heard about yet! Hikers, bikers, fisherfolk and climbers come stay! Campers, and skiers and birdwatchers come play!

Have no fear on food. Local farms can provide almost all the produce you need and our local wineries can wash it down. A couple of national brand supermarkets are about 10 minutes away. Farmers' markets are regular occurrences in each of the surrounding towns. Lots of mostly cheaper options for dining in Delta and Cedaredge. Also some great little spots we will be happy to tell you about.

Many people these days are traveling with PETS. We want to be helpful and accommodating. We will accept PETS on a case by case basis. Please message us that you would like to bring your pet. There is a one-time $50/pet/stay fee which is requested and transacted on the platform after your booking is confirmed. Unfortunately, if your pet has uncontrollable issues like shedding/drooling/barking/house training, the Turquoise Door is not likely a good fit. Please be prepared to be with your pet at all times, or leave them in a kennel if they must be left alone inside.

We also try to be accommodating of marijuana tourism. Please do not, under any circumstances, smoke inside. Otherwise, go for it. Please be aware that there are no recreational dispensaries in Delta County. We also do not tolerate any other illegal drugs on property.

It is important to be clear on this point too- This property is one where we practice and expect our guests to practice respect for their fellow humans. We proudly welcome all LGBTQ folk. We also proudly welcome people of any color, race, religion, ethnicity, culture, political leaning---whatever. If you're a good person and your money is good, we wantcha!

Where you’ll be

Orchard City, Colorado, United States

Welcome to Delta County! This gem of an extended neighborhood is still a bit of a tourist secret. There is so much to offer, and all so close!

Exceptional food and drink options abound. We're located in the heart of Colorado farm country. There are organic farms and orchards and wineries in every direction. The many geographies and geologies present fabulously diverse terroir. Plenty of restaurants and full service grocery stores in the area too.

The Great Outdoors are calling, and you must answer! This area is a dream for the outdoorsman. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is in our backyard. The largest flat-top mountain in the world, The Grand Mesa makes the silhouette for your sunsets. We would love to give you some recommendations to get the most out of your time in the area.

The property is easy to find and parking is never a problem. We love our neighbors and do our best to support the local economy.

You'll be welcome to walk through that Turquoise Door.

Hi! I'm a 5th generation Denver native with roots and pride in my place. I love welcoming people to the Mile High City and putting our best foot forward by hosting my home. In July 2020 I also become owner and proprietor of a very cool property in Western Colorado currently hosting three tiny homes. Before COVID I spent several long stretches of the year working as a Tour Director. I lead small groups on wonderful vacations like "Italy's Great Cities," or the "Best of Spain." I also lead student groups to DC and NYC, and birthright tours to Israel. Long term travel is in my system. I've spent years at a time in Morocco for the US Peace Corps and more years in each of Japan, Israel and Costa Rica working mostly as an English teacher and basketball coach. Between the really long living abroad situations, I tried to see as much as I could see. From the top bunk of a crowded boxcar on the Trans-Siberian Railway, to five-star hotels in Jerusalem I stayed everywhere. Seeing the best and worst of accommodations, I learned to love the hospitality game. In 2014 I returned to Denver to became a family caregiver. I began hosting a small family owned condo in Denver. That little condo kept my pockets jingling and my mind spinning for four years. So many problems! Floods and bugs and drugs, Oh my! But I worked that little listing, and I leveraged my hard-knock education into SuperHost status. When it came time to trade up, I sold the condo and found this wonderful house in Denver. I selected it specifically because I recognized its versatility as an AirBnB property. This home will forever be a work in progress. It will never be perfect. But it may be perfect for you! I am an individual home owner and not a large conglomerate or property management company. I'm working to improve and integrate new technology including dynamic pricing, limited automated messaging, and streamlining all my cleaning processes. Would love to have you see these little passion projects of mine. Speak to you soon!
