Armação de Pêra has a huge sand that stretches for over 6 km, surrounded by wonderful limestone cliffs that form the natural setting of many of the beaches in this western Algarve region. Originally used by local fishermen from the neighboring village of Pêra to prepare their armação, Armação de Pêra has become one of the most popular beaches in the Algarve and a modern tourist resort offering a large number of amenities and entertainment.
Armação de Pêra has a wide variety of products on offer. In addition to miles and miles of fine golden sand, bathed by calm, warm waters, the promenade that surrounds the beach is lined with bars, restaurants and gardens that provide a pleasant break from the sun and the sea. Picturesque fishing boats and fishermen's huts grace one end of the beach, marking the beginning of the marshy lands that lie at the mouth of the Ribeira de Alcantarilha and that provide a haven for the countless species of migratory birds that visit the Algarve every year. Some of these boats can be rented to carry out exploratory trips around the caves and hidden caves that dot the coast and are often excellent places for deep and surface diving. Other water sports include windsurfing and pedal boat hire.
The pier area is buzzing with excitement and the joy of a holiday. Bars, clubs and restaurants abound in this area and offer both local and international cuisine. A more local flavor is found in the restaurants that populate the narrow, cobbled streets of the historic part of the city, where fish, as always in the Algarve, is the star of the menus. Grilled sardines and mackerel or the fishermen's “stew à la Tia Chica”, also based on sardines and mackerel cooked with lemon, top the list, followed by sweets, “morgados” or “slugs” made with eggs. Finally, there's nothing better than a glass of the Algarve's famous liqueur – the “medronho”, made with arbutus berry.
There are many shops in Armação de Pêra that offer a range of holiday essentials and some local products, including pottery, embroidered linen and jewelry. Shopping centers located not far away, in Portimão and Albufeira, offer a greater selection of shops. If you are planning a trip inland, the historic town of Silves is perfect for shopping for traditional handicrafts: bobbin lace, wicker objects, miniature Algarve houses and colorful patchwork quilts and pillows.
The landscape around Armação de Pêra is too beautiful to overlook and is well worth a visit. Leaving the coast behind and venturing inland, the landscape reveals a cluster of colorful pomegranate and orange groves, dotted with almond, fig and carob trees. Among the trees are typical whitewashed Algarve houses, with their Arabic-style chimneys and blue-rimmed windows. A little further away, in the mountains of the Serra de Monchique, arbutus and cork oaks offer shelter to birds of prey, including goshawks, falcons and eagles.
The historic city of Sines, capital of the Algarve in the 11th century, it is located on one of the hills of this mountain range, overlooking the river Arade, and access to this city can be done by boat from Portimão. Despite the destruction caused by the 1755 earthquake, it has interesting monuments that add color to the history of this region. The battlements of its imposing castle offer an enchanting view over the landscape and numerous excavations have allowed the discovery of relics from the Iron Age, which can be admired in the Archaeological Museum. The riverside area offers a large number of restaurants and an opportunity to admire the Roman tip and the restored Fábrica do Inglês – an old cork factory that has been transformed into a sophisticated leisure and exhibition centre. The cork museum won the Best Industrial Museum in Europe award.
Golf lovers have at their disposal a variety of golf courses in the vicinity, the closest being the Herdade dos Salgados course, behind the adjacent Praia Grande.
Gone are the days when only fishermen visited the coast of Armação de Pêra beach. However, despite its growing charm as a holiday destination, they continue to carry out their daily activities and regard it as their own.
