Our family loved staying in this cozy cottage. It is funky, fun and creatively decorated. The beds are very comfy and the house was well stocked with games, books, movies and kitchenware. While we were too busy exploring the amazing countryside, we appreciated the homey touches. We are already wondering when we can return in warmer weather to take advantage of the beautiful garden. (Be sure to look for the secret room)!

The four of us loved our stay in this quirky, artistic, colourful, creative, comfortable home. The town of Mitchell is full of cowboy charm and character, we adored the peacefulness of quiet and bird song, and soaked up the beauty of both the cottage garden and the general area. It is super handy for visiting the John Day Fossil Beds and Painted Hills but is fast becoming a destination in its own right.

Aruna and Barbara's place is wonderful. If you are visiting the Painted Hills it is a must! It's very well situated for exploring the area and a relaxing place to come back to. I wish we had had an extra day just to spend time in the garden.

Our family had a great time visiting Barbara and Aruna's cottage in Mitchell. The description was very accurate - the home is well appointed with nearly everything we needed, from the kitchen, to the comfortable beds, to games/dinos/art supplies for the kiddos. The garden is fantastic, a stark difference from the surrounding high desert and a great place to return to after exploring the various units of the John Day Fossil beds. The town is remote, so there is a bit of driving (to be expected for the region), but the cottage is in a central location, making the Painted Hills, Priest Hole, Blue Basin, Sheep Rock, and Thomas Condon Paleontology Center all readily accessible for our family. Great trip and we'd highly recommend both the hosts and their accommodations. Thanks again, Barbara and Aruna!

This is the perfect setting from which to explore all units of the John Day Fossil beds. Garden was delightful - wonderful to come home from a hot day in the sun and choose one of multiple nooks equipped with chairs or benches and enjoy the coolness and birdsong. Fully equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, easy-to-operate DVD - perfect get-away and no hesitation recommending it to other travelers.

I'm originally from Germany and lived a long time in Seattle Washington where I owned a small restaurant with my 2 sisters in the famous Pike Place market. Now I live 5 months out of the year the beautiful High Desert of Eastern Oregon and run the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals together with my Mom Barb, a passionate gardener. The rest of the year, the winter months when business is slow, I live in Cologne, Germany enjoying a different kind of life . I love to have both worlds available to me.
