Hi, we are your hosts, James & Lindsey, and look forward to welcoming you to our newly renovated 2 bedroomed holiday home in our Paradise Found! Only 2 minutes walk away from the dazzling white sands of beautiful Otama Beach, you will instantly fall in love with this 2km stretch of pristine coastline and be wowed by the nesting shags who've made their home in the ancient pohutukawas along the estuary. If you get lucky, you may even see dolphins or orca!

The space
The eclectically-styled open plan living space is light and airy with a well equipped kitchen, including gas hob, electric oven, full-sized fridge/freezer, coffee plunger & teapot. The two spacious bedrooms each have a comfortable queen bed (with beautiful, quality bedlinen provided) both hosting commanding views out across an estuarine wetland.

Well situated to capture all-day sun, step out onto the large front deck and enjoy the views out to the ocean and the Coromandel Peninsula beyond, or take shelter under the large shady branches of the old Pohutakawa tree. Kick back and relax to the sounds of the waves and surrounding birdlife.

As well as a brand new indoor bathroom, a new enclosed, outdoor hot & cold shower has been installed so you can take pleasure in a refreshing rinse-off after a day at the beach.

Indoors, a flat-screen TV with FreeView comes with a DVD player and a good cross-section of movies or if TV isn't your thing, then there is also a selection of games and books on offer.

For the colder season, there are brand new electric blankets on both beds, along with extra, spare blankets should you need them.

Whilst we do provide free WiFi, please note that the internet speed can be a bit slow at times but adequate enough for browsing the internet, emails and YouTube etc. Cellphone coverage is possible in certain areas on the property.

Our water supply is provided by the rain so we ask that guests be mindful not to waste this precious resource. Also please note that in the drier months we may not be able to offer the use of our laundry facilities, however for long-stay guests there is a serviced laundrette in nearby Whitianga or a self-service laundry at Kuaotunu Campground.

Guest access
The entire 2 bedroom home to yourselves.

Other things to note
Smoking is allowed outside, away from open windows / doors :-) thank you. We also ask guests to make use of our high pressure outdoor hot water (or cold if you prefer) shower to rinse off that beautiful caster sugar sand :-)

Location

Opito Bay, Waikato, New Zealand

We are situated at OTAMA BEACH which is almost completely undeveloped, with only a small number of houses, mostly holiday homes, dotted around the hills behind the eastern end of the beach. The beach is a very good swimming beach, occasionally with good conditions for surfing. In the off-peak season you can often have the beach to yourself. It has the finest, whitest sand on the Coromandel. So fine it squeaks!

Opito Bay is a further 9 minute drive (5.3km) along the Black Jack Road.

Kuaotunu, a 10 minute drive over the Black Jack Hill, is a small beach village with a general store, for the basic essentials (and mammoth ice-creams!), a cool café/gallery serving local organic coffee and homemade deliciousnesses, and the ever-popular and quirky Luke's Kitchen where, along with other tasty handcrafted dishes, serves up the best wood-fired pizzas this side of the equator! Great vibes, friendly staff, and live music (at the weekends).

Another highlight in nearby Kuaotunu is Stargazers, a privately owned Observatory, offering Galaxy Gazer Astronomy Tours to give astronomy enthusiasts a chance to view the beauty of our Southern Hemisphere free from light pollution. Bookings are essential, which we are more than happy to do on your behalf.

Local industry includes an artisan, hand-forged knife maker, artists, potters, roasted macadamia nuts and honey.

Whitianga (19km from Otama Beach) is the nearest main town, offering a wide range of restaurants & cafés (check our Guidebook for our favourites), two supermarkets, shops etc. It is also home to the magical, geo-thermal ocean village, The Lost Spring, where you can indulge yourself in a rejuvenating spa treatment or a soak in the various pools, surrounded by the sound of flowing water and native birdsong. An all-day brunch menu, locally-produced coffee, Tapas, Platters and a full à La Carte menu is also part of the experience on offer.

Other nearby attractions:

Historical Coromandel township (33km) with the unique Driving Creek Railway (36km - NZ's only narrow gauge mountain railway) and their brand new Zipline tours - eight ziplines of varying heights and lengths, carrying guests along a canopy of native flora within Barry Brickell's 25ha estate.

Hot Water Beach (50 mins)
Cathedral Cove & Hahei (1 hour)
New Chums Beach (30 mins)

... and so much more!

I’m originally from Northumberland, near the borders of Scotland and have lived in New Zealand since 2004. My Partner James is a 5th generation Kiwi who has spent his whole life holidaying on this beautiful Coromandel Peninsula we are now so blessed to call home. James is a primary school teacher and I’m a budding artist, dabbling in anything and everything! Having bought our forever home here at Otama Beach in May 2018, we have just finished renovating our holiday home which sits in front of the main dwelling ... the next project :-) We have both travelled far and wide and can’t think of a better place to live than our Paradise Found. We very much look forward to meeting you and hope you enjoy your stay in this little slice of paradise we are lucky enough to call home :-)
