Restored early 20th-century quarry house amongst the forests and lakes of Skåne. Mid-century furnishing, original artworks, and industrial lamps throughout. Renewed hardwood floors and wide-plank timber walls. Oak pivot windows fill the space with light and air. 100m away lies a freshwater-filled quarry for bathing. Adjacent is the childhood home of a Nobel prize-winning author. Diabase quarry 300m away with sculptures and a gallery tucked in the trees. *a loving cat, boots, stays at the house*

The space
This home was built in the early 20th century(~1906) and restored in the early 21st (2019). The home has all modern amenities while retaining a rustic feel. Heating is provided 3 ways (geothermal and kakelugn-original swedish fireplace), fiber-optic internet at a zippy 250 Mbps, all new appliances (dishwasher, laundry, stove, oven, etc). The house is user-friendly, but we do provide a detailed 'how-to' guide to ensure your safety and satisfaction. Two outdoor and one covered terraces provide ample space for enjoying the sunshine. The upstairs bathroom features an antique zinc bathtub and a shower with custom copper fixtures. The home maintains an open floor plan therefore only one bedroom is listed although space for four is provided. If a larger group, ask about our beautifully designed outhouses on site. The bedroom features a king-size Hasten's bed. Additional bedding and privacy dividers are available for up to 6 guests in total. The home is perfect for a creative getaway with friends, a romantic hideout as two (or two couples), a departure point for exploring in nature, or a cultural tour of the museums and galleries in the surrounding area.

Where you’ll be

Gylsboda, Skåne län, Sweden

Gylsboda is a small village of approx. 50 people at the northern border of Sweden's Skåne region. It was established as a Diabase mining village with hundreds more inhabitants in its heyday. While a quarry still exists the village has shrunk to its current quiet size. You can still see the distinctive black rock forming the foundations, stairways, and stonewalls, of many of the community's homes.

Gylsboda was the childhood village of the Nobel prize-winning author, Harry Martinson. Now it is home to a number of local artists who produce paintings, sculptures, ceramics, jewelry, and literature. Local works can be found at the Glysboda Sliperiet, our community arts center.

There are at least 5 lakes within walking distance of the home. The closest one is great for swimming and paddling. Other outdoor activities include hiking, running, mountain biking, and foraging in the forest where wild food abounds.

Our regional hub is Lonsboda, approx. 5 km away, which has an organic farm store, two grocery stores, a few cafes, two great loppis (second hand stores), a yoga studio, and a fitness center.

Further afield you can visit Svarta Bergen (museum and sculpture park), Nyteboda Skov (an ancient forest), Lake Immeln (canoeing to 200 islands), Loshult Handelsbod (Swedish fika and the best baked bread and cardamon rolls), Almhult-home of IKEA (and a floating sauna), Linnes Rashult (delicious vegetarian lunch buffet), Wanas Konst (sculpture park and gallery), and other Skåne highlights.

I work for a Canadian software company. I've lived in Copenhagen for 5+years with my partner Martin. We've spent two years restoring an early 1900's quarry master's house. Before this I lived in Newfoundland, New Hampshire, California, Oregon, and British Columbia. I love Copenhagen for its culture, cycling, and urban design. We spend most of our free time in the village in Sweden where we garden, renovate, and swim. I love to travel-and hosting travellers from around the world.
