Camping in Algonquin Park is expensive! And who wants neighbouring tents? Come stay on a working farm in the quiet town of Maynooth, just 30 minutes from the East Gate of the Park and the town of Bancroft.

This campsite is nestled in a bit of forest, on a clearing that's a layer of moss on rocks. It does get some morning light.

This site is located right close to the outhouse, and 200' from the field kitchen.

The space
This third-generation farm with a two-hundred year-old house is a passion project in ecology, food security, and preserving traditional skills.

Pigs, goats, bees, ducks, chickens, and a cow work in a cycle of inputs: digging, clearing brush, and fertilizing future farmland in this rocky place, so that we can grow awesome organic veggies.

We have 35 acres, and two nice clearings in the forest. This site is a short drive/walk from the farmhouse, and quite private. This campsite is large enough for a 6-man tent or two smaller tents. The clearing is a base of moss and pine needles, but is set atop granite bedrock in places. Next to the flattest areas for tents is a fire pit. We stock some firewood, starting materials, and water to extinguish, but we encourage you to use deadwood and help us clean up the forest surrounding!

Trailers, campers, and other vehicles are welcome as long as the ground is not spring-soggy. You can park fairly close to the campsite.

There is an outhouse and field kitchen with a propane stovetop, small propane grill, and wash-sink (rain barrel-fed.) Jugs of potable water are provided. The kitchen is screened-in against bugs. It's rustic, but serviceable!

The field kitchen is equipped with some basic amenities and tools like pots and pans, soap, oil, spices, and dishware for 6. Hot sauce, soya sauce, Coffee Mate, and white wine vinegar complete the tiny pantry, as well as a basket of garlic. A french press for your coffee, tea towels, and candles. There is a shitty old propane BBQ with tools and a propane stovetop. It has solar twinkle lights to help you navigate in the dark, and a pull-cord solar light for nighttime cooking. You shouldn't need to bring any cooking equipment, unless there's something special your camp meals require.

There is NO REFRIGERATION and no oven, or running water, though potable water is provided and we have ice to sell down at the farmhouse.

A few outdoor and indoor games might be found in the kitchen: boccia, croquet, a frisbee, and some tabletop games for inclement weather.

Fresh eggs may be available, and u-pick veggies and herbs. We may have meat for sale.

You're also welcome to tour the farm and interact with the animals: pigs, goats, chickens, and ducks. In fact, you may have some for neighbours!

WIFI does not reach the field, and guests often sit on our porch if they need to access the internet. The password is available in our welcome book.

Where you’ll be

Maynooth, Ontario, Canada

Maynooth is home to antique stores, a bakery, and a pub open Friday and Saturday nights with live music. There's a liquor store, gas bar, ATM, and general store with necessities.
** Operation of these amenities has been impacted by COVID-19 and not all are available.

Please be warned that the town on Maynooth is your last stop for amenities, and shuts down at 6 p.m. daily. Be sure to bring enough fuel! (and beer)

We can direct you to fishing, swimming, and hiking spots, plus three close-by provincial parks. We have a small aluminum canoe we can lend, suitable for 2 people.

The town of Bancroft, with more amenities, galleries, and really good coffee is 20 minutes south. Here you can rent canoes and kayaks.

There is a more complete list of things to do and see in our welcome book.
