For those who truly want an escape from life’s stresses and distractions, The Historic Hut at Summer Haven, St. Augustine, is the perfect getaway. In 1892, wealthy northern businessman Thomas Mellon built The Historic Hut as a place where his family could enjoy each other and the good life without distractions.

Decades of wonderful family vacations followed. Later, when Hurricane Matthew hit, much of the area was wiped out. In 2019, the family updated and renovated The Historic Hut, making it an even more peaceful and restorative place to spend quiet time by the sea.

The home sits right by the shore. It’s perfect for beach barbecues and picnics grilling fish you’ve caught yourself. There is good fishing in the Sumer Haven River which flows a mere 100 feet to the west of The Hut. Like so many before you, you’ll spend pleasant hours enjoying the view of the ocean and the salty sea breezes from the elevated deck. The scene is so peaceful you may want to pick up a camera or try your hand at painting. There’s something about the shore that gets the creative juices flowing.

The Historic Hut’s living room features the original fireplace built from stones found on the property. You’ll fall in love with the comfortable furniture and multitude of windows bringing nature’s beauty indoors. Pine floors are original to the home, preserving more of The Historic Huts legacy. You’ll find board games to enjoy with your family as well as a TV with cable. The Historic Hut also offers Wi-Fi so you can share photos with friends back home.

The updated galley kitchen is just off the living room. You’ll find the utensils, appliances, cookware and serving ware you need to prepare meals for your family. Near the kitchen is the dining room with a table featuring seating for eight. Nothing says family time quite like a meal together!

There are three bedrooms within The Historic Hut, two with double beds and one with two twin beds, allowing you to sleep up to six comfortably in this beachside home. The bathroom includes a new walk-in shower and vanity with granite countertop, offering plenty of room for any and all toiletries.

Though the home was erected over 125 years ago, recent updates provide modern convenience – including air conditioning and cable TV. But the flair of a simpler lifestyle is ever-present at The Historic Hut. For example, the laundry facilities on-site are open-air and feature a stacked washer and dryer as well as an outdoor drying line. The salty sea breeze will have your clothes ready in no time!

Erosion from Hurricane Irma created an area of large boulders blocking beach access points but walking between these boulders provides a relatively easy entrance to the beach. The beautiful wide, sandy beach is not crowded because of the limited access and little general public knowledge of it. It stretches a half of a mile to the North to Matanzas Inlet, and to the south more than a mile to Marineland and beyond. During the week you may have it to yourself! On weekends it is used by local families and fisherman. It is the best sea turtle nesting beach in the country. If you’d prefer to drive, an access point one mile north allows for direct beach access at the Fort Matanzas National Park. There’s plenty of free paved parking and a boardwalk that meanders through the park to the shore.

Leave the noise and frustrations of a crazed world behind and bring your family together for a fun-filled vacation at The Historic Hut. Reserve your preferred dates today!
