The space

Scaurbridge House is just 4 miles from Drumlanrig Castle and 30 from Dumfries House. Fishing, shooting, walking, birdwatching, country pursuits and lots of unspoilt nature are in abundance here or nearby. Let me organise an itinerary or wander at will if you prefer. Whatever you choose, you can be assured of my attention to detail and to your individual requirements. Penpont is the birthplace of Joseph Thomson, the African explorer and the home of world renowned artist Andy Goldsworthy. If art is your pleasure, there are sculptures by Henry Moore, Rodin and Epstein nearby and many interesting local artists offer visits to their studios showing a highly eclectic range of works.
Robert Burns farmed at Ellisland, just 10 miles away and Greyfriars Church was the scene of the killing of the Red Comyn by Robert the Bruce.

Penpont lies approximately two miles west of the River Nith surrounded by the gentle hills which afford superb views.

This historic area welcomes the fisherman, golfer, naturalist, rambler, cyclist or country lover.

A graciously-styled home in a beautiful little village. you will be well taken-care-of by the personable hostess. Breakfasts were excellent and served with style by a lady who obviously loves what she is doing!

A genuine old-fashioned, full-service bed and breakfast with an extremely helpful host in a gorgeous historical village near Thornhill. Fresh scones, local honey, mint tea, warm showers, comfortable beds. We were in town for the Electric Fields Festival at Drumlanrig Castle, and we walked there and back the first day –– about an hour each way, a lovely walk but be careful with the first stretch of road, fast traffic, hedgerows, and no sidewalks.

Elizabeth Ann was not just a brilliant host, but a wonderful person. She was so inviting from the moment we booked. The house was magnificent, elegant and had wonderful characteristics which made it feel warm and homely. We were warmly greeted and Elizabeth Ann fixed up some homemade Scottish pancakes with some tea. I can't give everything away here, do go and visit, and have an adventure!

My husband and I both had a great time at scaurbridge house. We wanted a truly memorable country retreat and we were not disappointed. Elizabeth Ann is a great host and we thoroughly enjoyed her generous hospitality.

Perfect isn't a word I use often, but Scaurbridge House and its lovely host Elizabeth Ann fully deserve such praise. A grand and pretty house set against the backdrop of the rolling Scottish hills (of which there were excellent views in our room), but only a short hop to the nearest pub in Thornhill. We were met with afternoon tea when we arrived (some of the best home-made scones I have ever tasted!) and made to feel entirely at home. It's the attention to detail that really made our stay stand out - heated plates with our delicious breakfast, for example. These things do not go unnoticed. Thanks again for making our romantic weekend away from the city a very special one. We will see you again. Mat & Clare :)

Elizabeth Ann is a wonderful hostess! The room was spacious and breakfast was wonderful. Elizabeth Ann was flexible and catered to our needs, arrival and departure times. I would recommend staying here and make sure you take a walk down the river to the waterfall!
