Charming cottage on St. Inigoes Creek -- peaceful setting, beautiful water view. 1.5 miles to St. Mary's College & Historic St. Mary's City.

On DoD business? We're 15 mins to Pax River and 10 mins to Webster Field. Ask about our per diem rates.

The space

The cottage was built in 1950 and was home to one family until we bought it in 1997. Over time we have added many upgrades but it still retains the rustic charm of a typical Southern Maryland home from that period.

The cottage is adjacent to our own home but it is accessed by its own driveway where our friendly dogs may greet you at the gate. Views can be enjoyed from the living room, sunroom or the creekside deck. The bedrooms are small but comfortable. Both have closets and dressers for storing clothing.

There is a sleep sofa (love seat size) in the den. This has generally been used for a child or young adult.

Should you be traveling with your own dog, the cottage has the added advantage of having a private, fenced yard.

Guest access

You will have access to our dock (you will need to sign a waiver), and a launching area for your kayak or canoe. Perhaps you are liveaboards looking for an opportunity to dry out. If you are coming by boat, please inquire about free docking availability.

Interaction with guests

Since we live right next to the cottage and share a large lot, you will see us from time to time, but we do respect your privacy.

Other things to note

We live in a rural area of St. Mary's County. The closest grocery store is 15 minutes away. Depending on your plans and schedule, you may want to stop there first on your way down to the cottage.
Additional restaurants and shopping are located in California, MD and Leonardtown, MD both about a 25 minute drive.

It was hard to tear myself away from this cozy cottage on a quiet creek in Southern Maryland. Lots of historic sites to see nearby, but my relaxation was to sit and watch the autumn leaves fall, on the deck, with that view! Maureen and Steve were warm and welcoming hosts. They provided wine, snacks, beverages and ambassador dogs Seamus and Lucky, who were friendly visitors along with the ducks and geese. The most complete kitchen I have ever rented; I needn't have brought my own stuff, since they thought of everything. The cottage really feels like home and I know someday I will return. The neighborhood is quiet and perfect for walking, especially with waterside views down each road. Highly recommended.

Maureen and Steve were amazing hosts! They were quick to respond to any questions or updates I had on our visit. The house is cozy, charming and quite. Everything posted is accurate and we were greeted with some cheese, meat, hummus and wine. The house and host were outstanding.

Simply Superb!! Even better in person. Maureen & Steve were extremely helpful both prior to and during my visit. Upon arrival, I got a tour of the property and house and was provided a chilled bottle of wine, cheese and crackers. Seamus and Lucky greeted me every morning and Maureen left treats for me to happily spoil them! The patio was by far my favorite. Morning coffee overlooking the creek and watching the squirrels was the most peaceful part of my day. I was in and out every day working on PAX River Naval Base (only 20 minute drive), but worth it for the cottage. The entire house had everything - I mean everything - you could need and the kitchen was very well equipped: even had a blender for my morning smoothies! Flashlights, extra blankets, bug spray, clothing detergent, etc. The bed was extra comfortable. I hosted a small BBQ with friends and Steve even came over to help make sure the Gas grill had propane and was working prior to grilling. The only downside was no cell phone reception, which some might find enjoyable. I was by myself and found it a bit uncomfortable. However, the wireless internet provided was a fine substitute. I can't say enough kind things about this home, the hosts, and their pups! Thank you. Hope to come again soon.

Lauren, We're so glad you enjoyed your stay with us and we'd love to host you again. I wanted to let you know that we have now added a phone to the cottage. Cell service can be spotty down here, especially for AT&T customers, and decided a land-line was a necessity. Thanks for your helpful review.

A simply fantastic hideaway!! Maureen and Steve were so warm and welcoming. You could feel the hospitality before even arriving and it got even better as my time at the cottage went on. My two week stay here while working on PAX River Base was the perfect home away from home and it was the little things that made it that way. The cozy blankets, the beautiful back porch overlooking the creek with bug spray provided, the grill (and Steve ensuring it would be ready for a small BBQ I hosted), the small food/wine touches, and their accessibility when needed. I was welcomed every morning/afternoon by their sweet dogs. I certainly was able to spoil them with the treats Maureen left in the cottage! Id recommend when arriving on your first day, to try to go during daylight hours. It's really dark and took some getting used to for an urban girl. After a few nights of settling in, I realized all was perfect, safe, and sound. Hope to come back one day. Thank you M&S - I'm missing it (and the pups) already!

The Bernard's were extremely welcoming and the cottage was perfect; the photos really do not do this place any justice! Maureen greeted us right when we arrived, showed us around the property, and let our dogs meet their dogs and take a dip in the creek. The cottage had everything we needed from shampoo and toothpaste to snacks, wine and coffee. We were able to take kayaks out on the creek where we saw herons, hawks, a bald eagle, and lots of fish. The cottage is close to Solomons Island, so we did a day trip there where we rented a sailboat, and it is close to Slack Winery, which sits right on the water. I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone that wants a peaceful and relaxing getaway.

Our stay at the Creekside Cottage exceeded our expectations. The cottage is charming, clean, well-maintained, and well-appointed. The Bernards are so thoughtful with extra touches, such as flowers on the kitchen table and snacks waiting. The setting is peaceful and lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed kayaking; from the kayaks we saw an eagle, nesting osprey, great blue herons, and kingfishers. It is very convenient to St. Mary's College of Maryland--we don't have an affiliation with the College, but thought if one of our children happens to end up there we would love to use the Bernards' cottage as our go-to lodging. The only problem we had was that the cell phone service and wireless internet service were both iffy. We did not say anything to Maureen or Steve, so we don't know if there might have been an easy fix for the strength of the wireless they provide; next time we might try bringing our own hot spot to more reliably keep in touch with our kids.

Emily, We are happy to hear you enjoyed the cottage. Cell service is definitely spotty down here. Thanks for mentioning the wireless internet, we disconnected and then re-connected and it seems to be working fine now. I'm sorry to hear it was acting up during your stay and I know how frustrating that can be.

Maureen and Steve were awesome hosts! The cottage was perfect for our anniversary trip getaway. Our yellow lab loved meeting their dogs and playing in the river for hours. We even got her to sit on the kayaks with us! They thought of every little detail - from snacks and wine to the dog towels and kayaks.

Thanks, Brian! We're very happy you enjoyed our guest cottage. I loved that you had Annie sitting so quietly on a kayak. I'm going to try that with our dogs as well, but only one at a time. ;-) Maureen & Steve

My husband and I are both retired from the Federal Civil Service. I enjoy traveling with my husband or girlfriends, hiking, gardening, and kayaking. Steve would prefer to stay closer to home where he can work on his boats, fish, crab, and spend quality time on the water. Together we enjoy boating, cooking, wine, and socializing with our friends. We are both avid dog-lovers.
