Kirkwood, California, United States

Kirkwood is unique amongst Sierra mountain resorts. What sets it apart is its wilderness feel. It gets much more snow than anywhere in the Sierras. The mountain has more great rideable terrain than an area twice its size. The terrain at Kirkwood is for all levels. On the mountain, you will find that it is virtually empty during the week. You will encounter, surprisingly, the smallest crowds in the Sierras on the weekend. Kirkwood is distinguished by its great groomers, great trees, awesome above the tree line glades and its well trained and courteous Vail (owned) staff. There is no attitude here. Kirkwood gets the most snow of any resort in the norther Sierras due to its high altitude, 7800' base, and unique exposure. When Squaw or Alpine get 5 inches, Kirkwood get 13". When Truckee gets rain, it usually snows at Kirkwood.Fresh snow and powder lasts longer here because it is not readily accessible to the greater Lake Tahoe metropolis and its attending hordes of opportunistic north shore locals or south lake and Reno day travelers.

Our condo lies 180 miles (3hours in good weather) from San Francisco. To get there you will travel on the scenic and truly fun to drive Hwy 88. What most people don't realize is that Kirkwood is no farther from the Bay Area than the North Lake Tahoe resorts yet it has none of the traffic hassles that you encounter on Friday or Sunday nights commuting on interstate 80. Truly easy-in, easy-out. Ski/ride all day Sunday and be home before the Tahoe crowd gets to Sacramento.

Kirkwood is a stand alone wilderness adventure reserve surrounded on all sides for 35 mile by national forrest. The village is small with few amenities (a small strategically stocked but expensive store, a couple of restaurants and bars, one sports shop). Because it is not close to any other development, Kirkwood is all about the alpine experience. It is the anti-Tahoe retreat. People who come to Kirkwood come for the terrain and the outdoor activities not the bar, dining out or party scene. You come to Kirkwood because you are and outdoors enthusiast. Kirkwood is distinguished by epic terrain that challenges and delights well beyond its size and scale. You can discover more diverse terrain literally right out our door than the big name resorts and you will not get bored. At Kirkwood, you play hard, walk home, cook a good meal, watch some TV, get a good nights sleep and get up in the morning and repeat. There are no hotels in Kirkwood, only condos to rent. Kirkwood is a unique wilderness opportunity far from the maddening crowds. It may look small but the map is deceiving. It plays big and won't disappoint.
Kirkwoods topography is more like the mountains near Mammoth... rugged, volcanic, above the tree line, alpine. Hiking, fishing, trail riding, lakes every where- a total escape from the typical crowds which frequent Lake Tahoe or other parts of the Sierras. If you get it, if it is your cup of tea, this will be the only place you ever want to go because there really is nothing like it anywhere in the western United States.

The summer and spring in Kirkwood is made for the adventurer. Trails, hiking, camping, mountain bike riding, fishing and alpine lakes abound. For motorcycling Kirkwood offers a fabulous launching pad for destination riding in any direction on unending well paved winding roads or gravel backcountry trails highlighted by numerous high mountain passes (Ebbets, Monitor, Tioga to name a few) . The weather in the summer is nothing short of spectacular.
