Great location
100% of recent guests gave the location a 5-star rating.
Fisher's Retreat is a luxurious detached medieval converted barn set in the magical rural setting of the Olchon Valley, it enjoys spectacular views of The Black Mountains and is a great base for hill walking.

We are in the Brecon Beacons Dark Skies National Park. The pretty towns of Hay-on-Wye and Abergavenny are a short drive away.

The enchanting Olchon Brook runs through the grounds of sloping fields and lake. These waters attract some rare wildlife including swallows and otters.

The space
The barn has a vaulted sitting / dining room with a woodburning stove, snug with tv / Blue-ray / DVD player, one superking and one double bedroom, two luxury bathrooms and a well-equipped kitchen with range cooker.

Guests will be able to roam the smallholding including the brook and fields. We are on a public footpath which runs to Longtown Castle along the valley. It takes 30-45 minutes to walk to path running the top of the Black Mountains, Offa’s Dyke.

We have a trout lake and places to sit and relax.

Guests may picnic in the gardens.

I enjoy welcoming guests and do everything I can to make you feel at home, relaxed and pampered. I moved to the country after an international corporate career and know how much a tranquil place can make for a rejuvenating rest and a real recuperation. This corner of the Brecon Beacons is balm to any soul. The mountains and trees are especially restful. We have beautiful elm, ash, oak, alder, elder, hazel, cherry, apple, plum, fig and apple trees living contentedly here and giving us all a sense of perspective in their slower time. In slower time still, the mountains are a relatively easy walk up to the top and are at their best when dusted with snow or peaking above the dragon’s breath cloudscapes we so often experience here. I love the birdsong here at dawn and dusk. The sight of the swallows and the sound of the cuckoos is a joy with the coming of spring. In winter we enjoy the arrival of the yellow-tummies of grey wagtails and the constancy of the dippers who nest here with their snowball tummies and water stealth. I have never before lived in a place where I can see the Milky Way with my own eyes. The night skies are spectacular to gaze. And for wildlife night company the bats, otters, moths, hedgehogs and owls cannot be bettered. I enjoy working on the little things that matter to you, to make your stay a memorable joy: such as fresh flowers by the bedside, plenty of bubble bath, candles and a warm fire glowing to greet you on arrival - whether outside in the fire pit on a balmy summers eve or inside in the wood burner in the frozen dead of winter. Incidentally, we get a lot of snow here and the sledging is excellent. One of my favourite ways to enjoy the micro landscape is to paddle the length of our part of the Olchon Brook watching the little trout who come to spawn and thinking back to who else must have looked upon the mosses and ferns of these ancient Celtic woodlands running the length of the brook’s steep tributaries. This is one of the greenest places on Earth.
