Where you’ll be

Tambon Rawai, Chang Wat Phuket, Thailand

Nai Harn Beach, which stretches for 4.5 kilometers, is one of the island's most popular hangout spots for people in the know. During the high season, this relatively quiet location, which includes the Royal Phuket Yacht Club, is a popular harbor for boats.

From November to April, the water is ideal for swimming, although caution should be exercised during the low season (May-October), when powerful undertows may be present. Relax with a sundowner at one of the local restaurants just above the beach.

Ya Nui, a sandy bay further south, is popular with snorkelers and divers. The tiny beach of Ao Sane, which is fantastic for snorkeling and can be accessed by taking the road that starts at The Royal Phuket Yacht Club parking park, is another out-of-the-way place nearby.

With its superb water quality, Nai Harn Beach is one of Phuket's most attractive beaches. It is surrounded on two sides by jungle-covered mountains, and inland there is a vast freshwater lagoon. Even during peak season, Nai Harn is never overcrowded, and weekends are livelier than weekdays since it is popular with both Thais and expats. Many visitors to Phuket never get to see this beautiful length of sand. The lagoon drains into the sea at the southern end, producing a stream that children enjoy playing in.

The water temperature is a pleasant 29°C all year. From November to May, flat lake-like crystal-clear water encourages you to take a plunge. Swells and rip tides occur during the southwest monsoon season, which runs from June to October. When red warning flags are flying, you should never go into the ocean.
The beauty of Nai Harn Beach is sometimes neglected in favor of the more popular west coast beaches. However, if you ask the numerous regular visitors to Nai Harn, they would tell you that they adore the beach because it is tranquil and pristine. It's also at a convenient location, close to all the activity and exciting nightlife (Patong is just 20 minutes away for example).

Beside the white sandy beach itself, there are a few interesting attractions in the area such as Nai Harn Lake, Nai Harn Monastery and a few nearby viewpoints such as Phromthep Cape and Kata Viewpoint.

Rawai Beach is 4km from Saturdays, holds the distinction of being the very first tourist beach on Phuket. Years ago, people from Phuket Town would drive the 17km to Rawai on weekends to while away the afternoon underneath the beach's casuarina trees rather than risk the (then) dangerous drive over the hill to Phuket's west coast.

Nowadays Rawai is a 'working beach' and a launching point for day boat excursions out to Phuket's surrounding islands. Many longtail boats available for hire line its shores, where you can arrange a trip to Coral Island, Koh Lone or Racha Island,or a fishing or snorkel trip. The beach is also used as a mooring point for the many fishermen who live in the area.

Rawai is home to the five-star resorts, Serenity Resort and Mangosteen and quite a few of Phuket's foreign expat population live in the area, lending a bohemian and laid-back flavour to the way of life there. Favourite nighttime haunts are Friendship Beach, towards Chalong, and Rawai's beachfront bars
