Where you’ll be

Verbania Suna, Verbano Cusio Ossola, Italy

Suna is the first village overlooking the Borromeo Gulf on the northern shores. After skirting the re-entry of Lake Maggiore, from Baveno to Feriolo, you leave behind the Sempione, and, after passing the village of Fondotoce, close to the first slopes of the mountains, following the lakefront you reach the heart of Verbania with its various centres. First among them is Suna, followed by Pallanza and, past the promontory, Intra.

The town of Suna, with its ancient medieval nucleus, is now joined to the city of Verbania in a succession of eclectic villas and lush gardens. The lakeside promenade, rich in magnolias and ligustres, offers a splendid panoramic view of the Gulf, Baveno and Mother Island. From the small port of the village, the view also extends over Pallanza, up to Isolino San Giovanni
.
Also overlooking the lake are the most famous monuments: the Oratory of Saints Sebastian and Fabian, dating back to the twelfth century; also known for the presence of a rock pictography today interpreted as an engraving of a famous game, the Mill Game; the Church of Santa Lucia, built in the sixteenth century; the Cioja Palace, formerly the municipal headquarters, which remains a rare testimony of a seventeenth-century aristocratic palace, not having been remodeled in the nineteenth century, as it was for most of the others.
On the Suna waterfront there is also the monument to the Fallen by Mario Tozzi, one of the Masters of Italian Art, and the home of Blessed Contardo Ferrini, a distinguished jurist of the late 1800s, admired throughout Europe, professor of exegesis of sources of Roman law at the University of Pavia.
