Where you’ll be

Terra del Sole, Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Terra del Sole rises in the gentle hilly landscape of the pre-Tuscan-Romagna Apennines, in the hinterland of the Adriatic Riviera and is a very rare example of an ideal city, perfectly preserved. Keeping the charm of the "fortress city" intact, this splendid Renaissance citadel pleasantly surprises the visitor at any time of the year. Built by the will of Cosimo I De 'Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany as a bulwark and defense of the Florentine borders, its walls guard buildings arranged with symmetrical regularity, in a rare example of military architecture, as well as the seat of Medici representation in the so-called territories Romagna and Tuscany. It is one of the few urban centers to boast a specific foundation date: December 8, 1564.
The central Piazza d’Armi, also called Piazza Maggiore, is the real "urban navel" according to the scheme of the "city on a human scale" traced by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. The two most important city buildings overlook it: the Church of Santa Reparata and, in front, the Palazzo dei Commissari or Palazzo Pretorio as if to underline the two powers that govern orderly civilian life.

There are numerous events in the area organized in collaboration with the Pro Loco of Terra del Sole and supported by other local associations, such as the Balestrieri Company, that of Flag Wavers and Musicians, that of the Roman and Florentine Villages and others; among these the most important is the Palio di Santa Reparata, the first Sunday of September with over 300 figures from the historic districts in 16th century costumes. The country is transformed: painted villages, palaces and castles with flags, squares populated by merchants, barkers and warriors and changing of the guard. Parades of representation, the contenders of the ancient crossbow and tug of war, the musicians and the flag wavers parade.
But there are many terrasolan events, such as the autumnal "Fugarena", the review of the nativity scenes inside the Medici ramparts, as well as various initiatives related to typical local products, such as wine and excellent olive oil from the surrounding hills. the village and the many products of the earth, often housed in the marvelous setting of the cloister of Palazzo Pretorio.

AROUND
At 2.5 km from Terra del Sole, stands the Rocca di Monte Poggiolo, the first Florentine fortress with a rhomboidal plan that offers a vast panorama over the whole of Romagna up to the Adriatic and allows various routes for pleasant excursions. Natural continuation of the inhabited center of Terra del Sole is instead the town of Castrocaro home of the unmissable thermal baths with the splendid Grand Hotel and the renowned Spa Magiche Acque.
