Kanasar Ecolodge, is a family run ecotourism venture located in Koti-Kanasar, a 31 km drive from Chakrata in Uttarakhand. The two cottages and 9 Tents are built on our apple orchard, in the modern adaptation of the traditional “kath-khuni” construction method, using stone and mud masonry with Deodar timber lacing and Chir Pine panelling inside. The Deodar roof with metal sheet.
The cottages have a picturesque view of the alpine mountains beyond and the apple orchard in the valley below.

The space
Planned to accommodate a couple on a romantic getaway, a cosy family holiday or a lively get together of friends, the two cottages are cosy yet spacious, with a living lounge at the entry level and a modern well fitted toilet. The lounge also has a fireplace to keep warm and reminiscent of a colonial influence. A covered deck that cantilevers into the valley below is the best element of the cottage. Gaze into the mountains beyond, watching the sun trace its path across the sky as you sip a cup of hot tea or read that book that you never get a chance to. Play i-spy with your kids watching the birds and butterflies around, all huddled on the deck.

Where you’ll be

Masak, Uttarakhand, India

Whatever be the season the air is rent with the cries of the Himalayan Magpie on the branch of the apricot or the red streak of the Scarlet minuet as it flits by. A mid altitude birdwatchers haven, Kanasar is an ideal place to explore some alpine bugiyals, and some undiscovered forests. Visit the shrine of Mahashu devta, the deity of the Jaunsaris or simply take in the crisp Himalayan air and the charm of the villages – enjoying hot cups of tea and delicious locally grown rajma, rice and bhang-ki-chutney.

Me and my brother Rajendra & his wife Anju run Kanasar Ecolodge. I am a qualified mountaineer and have been living in this Jaunsari village since birth, willing to share my knowledge about the region, flora, fauna and culture. Have been organising ecotourism treks and tours in this area for many years. Rajendra has studied MBA in Tourism from IITTM New Delhi and is extremely enthusiastic and friendly, eager to share stories. Anju, a native of Simla, married recently, is a talented and efficient cook. Managing our time between taking care of the guests and working in the fields, we are a dynamic team, and you will get a true taste of the “pahadi” culture, spending a few days with us.

During your stay

Me and my brother and his wife are around to host you and chat about our tribal customs, culture and lifestyle. We serve simple home cooked food, low on spice and oil. A typical meal would consist of home grown rajma and rice with greens, chapatis and chutney, will leave you coming back for more. If you are a non-vegetarian, our meat dishes are flavourful and exotic, and quite different from what you may have had before.
