Perched on the rim of Whychus Creek Canyon, this one-bedroom (plus sleeping loft) straw bale house is a cozy place to nest while checking out Sisters Country. Explore the area, roam the property, or enjoy sunsets and star-gazing from the hot tub.

The space

NOTE: If you see "orphaned" days on the calendar (i.e., blocks with fewer days than the usual allowed minimum--which varies by season--contact me by sending an inquiry, as those can often be made available.)

DESCRIPTION: Situated on 13 acres, and bordered by a nature conservancy on one side and a conservation easement on another, this eco-friendly straw bale house is perched on the rim of Whychus Creek Canyon. The 13 acres is bordered by a 58-acre nature preserve to the north, a 36-acre conservation easement to the west, and 13 privately-owned unoccupied acres to the east. So, it's while it's "only" 13 acres, it is surrounded by wild lands, so feels like many more. Eagles, deer, beaver, wild turkeys, otters, steelhead, and mountain lions--to name a few--have all been spotted within the last year either on or within a few hundred yards of the property.


The house has one bedroom (comfortable queen bed), with a sleeping loft located on the other side of the house (2 queen size futons; one on a frame under a skylight, the other on the floor). Please note that the two beds in the loft space can only be accessed by a vertical ladder, so might not work for someone with mobility impairments, or for very young children. There is also a futon chair in the main bedroom that folds out into a bed that would be suitable for a small child. (That futon bed is 30" wide by 48" long, with partial railings. It can be extended to 76" with the matching foot stool.)


While there is not technically a full kitchen, there is what I would describe as a well-equipped and very functional kitchenette. It has a counter-height fridge with small freezer, convection oven that's big enough to roast a chicken or cook two 12" pizzas at one time; a heavy-duty two-burner hot plate, double sink, coffee maker, microwave, and a selection of dishes, pots, pans, and utensils.


On sunny days in the fall and winter, the house is heated on sunny winter days by opening the windows that communicate with the 500 sq. ft. greenhouse attached to its south side. In summer, those windows remain closed, and the house stays up to 20 degrees cooler than outside temps, due to the super-insulation and high thermal mass conferred by the straw bale construction.


There's a deck in back that overlooks the canyon; it's a great place to take in the sunset, or enjoy a soak in the hot tub. There is almost no light pollution out here, and the star-gazing is excellent on clear nights (which, especially in summer, is most of them). Perhaps due to the proximity of Whychus Creek--which flows through the nature preserve next door--the bird watching tends to be excellent.


Other amenities include a Chartes labyrinth that overlooks the canyon, a 250 square foot climbing wall, and an eagle observatory. The observatory has a scope and webcam trained on a golden eagle nest across the canyon during nesting season (roughly March-early June). The nest has been home to successful fledges for each of the last seven years!

Feel free to ask questions to clarify things, but please understand that unless you agree to abide by those rules, it is very important that you not book a reservation. If you'd like to bring your dog, please mention that in your reservation request, tell me a little bit about your dog, and let me know you've reviewed the House Rules that pertain to guest dogs.


Please contact me about special rates for longer stays. (As a general rule, there won't be much as much discount during prime times, but there could be substantial ones in the off season.)

Please note: Cell service is pretty spotty here (try the back porch, or just west of the shop for best results), but there is reliable Wifi. Also, dogs live here, and run loose in the unfenced yard. (See House Rules section for more details about dogs--both mine and yours. :-)

One of the wonderful perks of being an AirBnB host is that there is a parade of interesting people to meet, right here in the comfort of my own property! However, I also know that sometimes people come to a place like this for introspection or romance and just want their space. Your vacation, your lead....

1. RULES PERTAINING TO PRIVATE ROADS. Once you turn on to Panoramic Drive, you are on private roads. If my guests are seen speeding, my listing could get shut down (which would, frankly, be a disaster for me--and no fun for you, either, because then nobody can stay here). Therefore: observe speed limits (20 mph) on these dirt roads! Toward the end of Lake Drive, where the gravel turns from red cinder to white gravel, you will be on a road that is maintained at astronomical expense by just myself and four neighbors. Again--if my guests to not treat this road with great care, my Airbnb will get shut down. Here is how to "treat the road with great care:" 1. Do not exceed 15 mph. 2. VERY IMPORTANT: DO NOT PULL OFF OF THE ROAD if you encounter another car. If you encounter another car, please back up to the nearest pull-out (there are 2 on this 1/3 mile section of road). Sorry to have to go on and on about this (I want your vacation to be a blast, and would prefer not to have to get so serious), but it's my livelihood, my neighbors' pocketbooks--and also your ability to book this listing--at stake here. I am only interested in hosting guests who are willing to be patient, go slow, and use the pull-outs, and who let me know that they saw and (solemnly) agree to this. Thanks.

2. SMOKING ONLY IN ONE DESIGNATED AREA: on the back deck, next to sand bucket for extinguishing butts. I don't care at all WHAT you smoke, but I care very much that you ONLY smoke it there. Fire danger here can be extreme, and guests once started a fire in the yard (by attempting to extinguish a cigarette in the dirt) that took 15 firefighters half a day to extinguish and came within 10 feet or so of the house; this was in the height of fire season, and could easily have turned into a disaster of regional proportions. (If the neighbors are worried about road usage, you can just imagine how they felt about a wildfire next door to their property! Can you blame them?)

3. FRAGRANCE POLICY. This listing is meant to be a haven for people with allergies and fragrance sensitivities. Therefore, NO scented personal care products such as perfume, cologne, strongly-scented lotions, and no, candles, incense (lit or unlit), air fresheners, essential oils. (These get in the furniture and linger past your stay--sometimes for weeks--and are distressing for people with allergies and sensitivities to such things. People like that have a very hard time finding places they can stay, and I am committed to providing one.) Also: NO insecticides or insect repellents, in the house, or on people who are in the house. Unscented personal care products are provided (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, shaving cream, deodorant, sun screen). No combustion of anything (e.g., candles, incense, cigarettes, etc.) in the house.


DOG POLICY (no need to read unless you're interested in bringing your dog): If you'd like to bring your dog with you, that can probably be arranged (we love dogs, have several of them, and understand that they are family members). DOGS COUNT AS AN EXTRA PERSON for reservation purposes, so please add them to your total. I do ask that they be crated if left alone in the house. (I can supply the crate, you supply the bedding, ideally. If this doesn't work for you (or your dog) for some reason, let me know and we'll see if we can work out an alternative--ahead of time. Otherwise, your reservation will be construed as agreement.) Again, if you would like to bring a dog, let me know in your reservation request, and please don't use InstantBook.

The Strawbale house does NOT disappoint. Beautiful views, quiet, wonderful juniper and pine smells. Plenty of room inside the house. Stocked with everything we needed. The hot tub was a nice touch after long days. Leslie was very friendly and accommodating. Our big dog Patch loved all of her dogs and thought we had brought him on an amazing doggy retreat! Short distance to Sisters. I would recommend this to anyone!

Leslie's place was quiet, clean, cozy, and a perfect retreat from the busy city. The deck and hot-tub overlooked a beautiful canyon. Inside, the straw bale house was warm and bright, with lots of deep windows casting soft light throughout. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone staying in the Sisters area.

Wow, what a great house and location! Very quiet, great views, cozy house, and still just 15min from Sisters. Which has great shops and lots of delicious restaurants. And best of all our dog got to run around and explore too! Just what we were looking for. Thank you Leslie for a perfect anniversary trip. Our batteries are fully charged again!
