Where you’ll be

Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Scotland, United Kingdom

A traditional Gaelic speaking, crofting and weaving township with a long curving pristine white sandy beach, Shawbost has many places of interest and provides excellent opportunities for the keen walker or cyclist.

The Community centre, the original primary school was renovated in 2005. It's facilities are well used with weddings, ceilidhs, and private functions. It boasts a fitness suite, a wonderful Community Garden and a Museum housing many artefacts from bye gone days including early crofting implements and features a wooden hand loom which formed the basis of the early Harris Tweed waving industry. Across the road from the Ionad, the Gaelic for Community, is the Shawbost New School where there is a swimming pool which is open to the public; an especially welcome facility for visitors with young families.

Shawbost boasts a Harris Tweed Mill, now employing around 70 personnel

Another local attraction is the Norse Mill, just a you leave South Shawbost heading to Dalbeg, this Mill is clearly signposted just before you come to Loch Raoinavat. The Norse since the Second World War, Mill has been beautifully restored, the Mill and others were still operating in the 1930's
