Clean and tidy
4 recent guests said this place was sparkling clean.
Lower Lodge was recently renovated by its architect owners. It sits in a large garden at the heart of a farm. Just eight minutes from Monmouth, the cottage still feels remote. It has a downstairs bedroom with en-suite bathroom for the less agile, and three bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs. Two rooms have twin beds, which can be zipped together to form a superking size, making the cottage perfect for couples or families. We can also put up a travel cot, to accommodate 9.

The space
Lower Lodge's appeal lies in the fact that it has so many south-facing windows and is very light and airy. We have tried to make sure there isn't a single dark corner in the place. It also has beautiful views of the Cwmcarvan valley, and a woodland behind the garden, where wildlife abounds.

Guest access
The cottage is heated by a biomass boiler, so you will be toasty, and has two log-burners too. We provide one load of logs (enough to keep two fires going for a long evening) at the start of your stay, but you can buy logs from us, if you order them in advance. There is WiFi, and a smart TV. Reception for mobiles can be found, though not everywhere! There is a BBQ in the garden, and a table and eight chairs for dining al fresco, as well as a door leading out from the kitchen into the garden.

Other things to note
The cottage sleeps eight, but is an extremely flexible space. It has one double bed, and one kingsize bed, and two super-king sized beds, each of which can also be split into two singles, to make a twin bedroom. If you would like to bring an infant in a travel cot, it is possible to set one up in the main bedroom upstairs (the one with the super-king/twin beds).

The market town of Monmouth is just ten minutes away, with no less than four supermarkets, and lots of lovely independent shops, a small cinema, loads of restaurants and cafes, and a great atmosphere. It is on the edge of Britain's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), created to protect the Wye Valley, which is nearby, where Tintern Abbey looms over the river. There's walking, around here and in the Black Mountains half an hour away, mountain biking, caves and culture. Bristol can be reached in 40 minutes, and Cardiff in 1/1.30 hours.

I love walking, cycling, reading, talking, drinking, dancing and thinking up book ideas (but never quite writing them). I am a mother to two small-ish children, at a bit too old an age, so I like going to be early. I miss city life, but I absolutely love living here, in Wales. I look travelling, and spent my time as a journalist interviewing people with lives very different from mine, all over the world.
