Where you’ll be

Japan

Ginkaku-ji, officially known as Jisho-ji, is a Zen temple which was constructed by the eighth Ashikaga shogun Yoshimasa, the grandson of Yoshimitsu, as his mountain villa in the Eastern Hills of Kyoto. Modeled after Kinkaku, the Golden Pavilion, the two-storied pavilion known as Ginkaku, the Silver Pavilion, symbolizes the culture of the Higashiyama period in the 15th century. The subdued appearance of the Silver Pavilion with a beautiful sand garden represents the Zen aestheticism of wabi-sabi.

Philosopher's Walk Area
This Tetsugaku-no-michi ( Philosopher's Walk) is a narrow way along Lake Biwa Canal. It runs from north to south along the foot of Higashiyama mountains, and the length is about 1.8 km.The path takes you along a watercourse, from Kumano Nyakuoji Shrine near Eikan-do Temple to the Temple of the Silver Pavilion ( Ginkakuji Temple ). The path was named " Philosophers Walk " from the fact that a widely known philosopher Kitaro Nishida ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)) who was teaching in Kyoto University, used to enjoy strolling along the path to think as he enjoy the scenary around the area. In 1921, a wife of a Japanese painter living around the path planted 300 cherry trees along the canal and the path has been one of the greatest spots for Sakura viewing in early April ever since.
