The space

A handful of movie crews have wound their way here for its picturesque beauty!

The Only Olive gets its name from the olive tree in the garden rumored to be a hundred years old - like the house itself - and is said to be the only Olive tree of the particular kind in the whole of Goa!
The property has been lovingly refurbished by the owner and his family and the villa was painstakingly restored to reflect its former colonial glory to perfection all the while retaining its inherent Portuguese influences … shell windows and a shared well included.
Its airy, high-ceilinged living room is tastefully furnished and the large, formal dining table can accommodate a group of 10.
The cool whitewashed interiors give off an aura of peace and serenity – an ideal setting for romance, bonding with friends and family, or a restful holiday.

Some of the photo credits go to Dew who blogs at crystaldewdrops.

Guest access

The villa is set in canvassed gardens filled with an abundance of sweet scented frangipani and Indian jasmine, interspersed with bamboo, mango, jack fruit, breadfruit, drumstick, cashew trees and of course - the olive tree.

The three bedrooms can be booked independently with the common hall, dining and the kitchen. Feel free to rustle up a meal inspired by the lovely repertoire of birds chirping around you or Santhosh the caretaker would treat you to his superlative culinary skills, be it veg or non veg.

The soft and luscious lawns make it a perfect place for your family to lounge and kids to play around.
The shared well is the only one that gives out sweet water in that area and there have been records of guests indulging in the joy of it like unlimited feni.

For those who love life and nature - it is the perfect place to relax in hammocks and rejuvenate – making the home stay seem like a slice of Portuguese life in Goa.

Interaction with guests

Adrian is driven by his passion in opening out his favourite abode to others. Though he doesn't stay there he visits it every second month. If he's around when you visit you can be rest assured of the company of his endearing personality. Even when he's away he makes sure you're comfortable.

His man Friday Santhosh is an asset on the property and has taken after his master over a period of time. The well being of the guests is his utmost priority and he leaves no stone unturned to meet their reasonable demands.

By and large Adrian leaves a bit of him there every time he crosses the vintage threshold and as you step in there as guests, you leave the place as Adrian's friends.

The neighborhood

The Only Olive is situated on a hillock with lovely views of the surrounding village.

Why is this Aldona's premium property?

This could be one of Aldona's premium properties by the very virtue of fact that it offers a ringside view of the best local culture and fare it can provide you with. We just got lucky with the property and its location, on a personal note :)
This is the only village caromed by rivers on all three sides and that too in the shape of a horse shoe. It offers spectacular view of cable stayed Corjeum bridge.

The St Thomas Church

The 16th century St Thomas Church here yields to relentless glory and its graveyard has this pithy writing, "aaj makka",which is "Today it's me, tomorrow it's you!

Ideal for families with kids

It's an ideal place to holiday with kids helping them connect with Nature, and the garden along with backyard provides huge space and freedom for kids to play around, especially if you're coming from metros or live in apts where there's no piece of land to step out right into and connect with.

Local facilities

The local market Tinto's has a pharmacy and a hoarde of stores and small eat outs for simple living.
The famous BAO is close by at walking distance just short of the Corjeum bridge. This provides the most delicious local Goan thali and sea food an meat delicacies. It's a must try.
Andron is at Nachinola around two kms away and is again the best eat out for authentic Goan fare. The pork and sea food preps are delicious.
It's a cluster of one the best local savouries around.
Tinto, the market place, also has a bar providing you with some best tasting feni.

Famous Indian snack and Goan sweets

Gokuldas Naik's family makes and sells some Indian snacks and savouries (chakries and chudas) that are a legend now and which are a huge hit with The Olive guests. And the juicy, blubbery bebinca, the premium kind, finds its way on the shelves of the local bakery here. And Adrian says right behind The Olive there's an Aunty who sells some "unbelievably" delicious sweets!

Nature's buff

The vicinity has the densest variety of birds and butterflies. It's a sheer delight for bird watchers.
Experience how you could bottle up time as you sit by the river side angling with the breeze pecking you all over. So be it angling or crab spotting or trailing the golden green path of fireflies in the night The Olive is the perfect choice for the romantic, explorer, traveler in you.

No wonder the area has drawn the literati in an unending love story. Many writers and artists have taken this place as their home!

Getting around

The villa is just a couple of minutes' walk from the local bus stop.

Also hired bikes and cars are readily available. The Olive has one or two bikes on its premises to rented.
There's ample space within the secure walled premises of The Olive.

The Only Olive is a perfectly wonderful villa if you're looking to live away from the maddening crowds. Set in a quiet village - Aldona - the house has gorgeous exteriors and interiors. Santosh is an excellent caretaker and will cool you the yummiest fish curry.

Ever since I set my eyes on The Olive in its website, I had wanted to stay there. It looked just the kinda place I would think of as a getaway, and that was what I had craved. Nothing disappointed me ever. The villa has an exuberance of positive energy, love and warmth hanging around, it instantly calmed me - sort of removed me from reality. The antique furniture and the curios add much story-like charm to the house and it's so damn cool and lovely within and without the house. You're spoilt for choice when you step out and look around at the greenery. Inside the house I loved the four poster bed and the arm chair. The white, silk sheers around the four poster cot make it so romantic and the cot itself looks like an invaluable museum piece. It's so functionally and aesthetically located, so much that it's just a lucky choice if you opt for it. We had a great time exploring the river side and walking around. We walked up to the local market, which is so close by, where you can begin and end your meals if you want. Such a thorough rustic experience. The bebinca and dos from Sebros are very good. Eating at Andron was delightful!! Santhosh the caretaker and his family are really adorable. He's a lovely cook, a simple daal bhaat or poha tastes delish. The drinking water tastes pure. I stepped into this villa and I had this wave of contentment wash me over. It's a great inland experience. And if you want the typical beaches (Baga, Calangute) just drive or bike over for 20 mins or so.

We had a lovely time at The Only Olive. The house was spacious, sunny and tastefully done. No dearth of quiet corners o retreat to. The village of Aldona is a large part of the charm of this place. Perfectly laid back, if that's what you're looking for. Adrian was very helpful and made it a point to ensure that we were comfortable. Santosh, the caretaker and his family, made us feel right at home at The Only Olive. This is a great choice for travelers who are looking for an experience of Goa that is more than just sunny beaches.

I love environment friendly living spaces and The Only Olive is my closest realisation to that. I believe in protecting Nature to protect our progeny.

Green Paper Works is my latest entrepreneurial enterprise. We produce tree-free, chemical-free paper from organic waste.
I was in the wine industry for close to two decades before GPW. Like the sparkling wines, I love people, laughter, conversations.

When I found the used up walls and the battered pillars and smoked out roof of an ancient Portuguese villa in the ravishing green of Aldona with the majestic Olive tree for its company, I could go no further but buy it, rebuild it with delicate strokes and give my dreams a body and some blood!
The Only Olive is both serendipitous and premeditated destiny - it's the inner being wending my way back to where I came from and sharing that joy with deserving travellers.
