The Tumbleweed Tiny House is located at the Solar Living Center (SLC) in Hopland, California. The Tiny House is a compact 89 square-foot, self-contained building on wheels. All proceeds benefit the Solar Living Institute, a nonprofit organization.

The space

The Tumbleweed Tiny House is located at the Solar Living Center (SLC) in Hopland, California. The SLC is the home of the Solar Living Institute (an environmental education non-profit organization), and the Real Goods Solar retail store. The site of the Tiny House (the SLC) is a 12-acre renewable energy and sustainable living demonstration. The property features various photovoltaic solar arrays, permaculture gardens, and an integrated, aerating water system that mimics natural streambeds, and includes an oasis that is positioned in accordance with the four directions. There are many interesting and educational attractions at the SLC and we encourage guests to fully explore the property.

Guest access

The Tiny House is a compact 89 square-foot, self-contained building on wheels. It was completed in 2013 by a group of Solar Living Institute (SLI) interns. It is now managed by SLI staff and current interns. Downstairs there is a compact kitchen, including a sink, mini-fridge, and stove-top. There is also a small shower downstairs. Upstairs there is a cozy, full-sized bed. The bed loft is accessed via a wooden ladder and is not handicap accessible. Wireless internet is available on the site under the domain name Real Goods.

NOTE: The toilet for guest use is outside of the house and is the public restroom for the SLC. Please do not use the toilet inside the house as it is not set-up.

Towels and bedding are made from organic materials. There is heat and AC available in the Tiny House. Due to the area, ants are common on the 12-acre grounds. We have noticed them in the house and are dealing with the issue (during the summer months). We ask guests to not leave food on the counters.

Interaction with guests

Minimal interaction required with guests. Staff, interns, and visitors to the Solar Living Center will be on site during normal business hours.

Other things to note

We provide coffee, tea, sugar, honey, granola bars, and a few bulk food items. The kitchen has cups, plates, utensils, a french press, and other essentials. The Real Goods store has a selection of snacks and drinks for sale.

Bathroom: There is a shower in the Tiny House. Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are provided or can be purchased in the Real Goods store. Please refrain from using toiletries that are non-biodegradable. The toilet does not function. Guests are to use the public restrooms (women and men separate). The restrooms have individual stalls and sinks. Guests can also use the outdoor kitchen and shower area in our volunteer-camper area. The shower area has an indoor and outdoor shower. Review the map found on our website for complete details.

Our guests have full access to the site when it is closed. SLI interns and caretakers live on the site.

My husband and I surprised my parents with a stay on the Real Goods Property. They were floored with excitement and had an absolute blast! We were all in such awe of the beauty there and so stoked to be a part of something so interactive and eco-conscious. The property owners were so understanding and allowed us to van camp on the property for 25$, easy peasy! We booked down to Steep in the AM for delicious CBD coffee. All in all, a night we will remember always. Thanks Real Goods!

We really loved staying here while we were up for a wedding in Cloverdale. We had never heard of the Solar Living Center, but it was really cool to stay the night on the property. The tiny house was truly tiny, but it was very comfortable nevertheless. The space is clean and comfortable, and it's close to the store and bathrooms. We felt safe and peaceful, and it was a great home base for us.

I had a fun time getting to visit the SLI at night during my last visit here. Staying in the tiny house was pretty fun, but there was some draw backs. The first was there was some spiders in the loft/bedroom area, and in such a small space they were pretty noticeable (they were caught and released!). The next was some of the volunteers/employees breaking the morning quite hours. I understand that during California summers work has to be done early in the day, but unfortunately for me- work began right outside the tiny house. Despite the few hiccups, staying in the tiny house and getting to see the SLI was a fun trip experience!
