I provide a cosy and spotlessly clean bungalow with a comfortable double bed and mosquito net, an ensuite bathroom with warm water shower and western-style toilet. The little house is situated in a peaceful garden of 3,000 square meters and has a beautiful view to the surrounding mountains. It suits travelers of all ages and families too. The many walks and bicycle rides which can be done along back roads, through the rice-fields, down to rivers make it worthwhile to stay for more than 1 night.

The space
Large room (4.5 m x 5.5 m) in a private bungalow
up to 4 guests
1 double bed with mosquito netting (additional mattress available on request)
Suitable for a couple's retreat or honeymoon.
I provide a thermos with hot water for coffee/tea, and continental breakfast is included. Local breakfast or other meals can be arranged at a reasonable price. I can arrange rental of motorcycles, and assist in the organisation of trips around Ruteng, to the Spiderweb Rice Fields, to Hobbit Cave, to Todo, to the crater lake Rana Mese or even to Labuanbajo or Bajawa.

Where you’ll be

Langke Rembong, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia

Ruteng is situated on a plateau at an elevation of 1'100 meters, which makes it beautifully cool in the evenings and early mornings with bright clear sunny days of around 27 degrees for much of the year. My Homestay is situated 3 km north of Ruteng, on a small hill called Golo Bilas, with superb views over terraced rice-fields to the north, and magnificent views over Ruteng toward the Ruteng Range and the active volcano, Gunung Ranakah, to the south. It is a magical spot on the road to Gua Liang Bua (the famous Hobbit Cave). It is easy to get to my Homestay - mini-bus and private car drivers know where it is (500m beyond Hotel FX72), or you can easily arrange an ojek in Ruteng.

Hobbit Hill Homestay is very safe and quiet, and stunningly beautiful. There are some fantastic walks and bike rides around the Homestay itself. Relax and enjoy the cool and clear mountain air at 1'100 meters after the heat and humidity of the coast.

Getting around
• 20 km to Cancar (via Wae Garit) - the Spiderweb Rice Fields are near Cancar (less than 30 minutes by car or by motorcycle).

• Continue another 25 km from Todo to Denge village, and walk for 2.5 hours to Wae Rebo.
• 15 km (30 minutes by motorcycle) to Gua Liang Bua (Hobbit Cave).
• 23 km to Rana Mese crater lake on the road to Bajawa

During your stay

My name is Getrudis Lawus, most people just call me Udis. Being born in Cancar (near the Spiderweb Rice Fields), which is 20 km from Ruteng, I am a true local Manggarai. But I speak and write English fluently, as I have lived in Tasmania for 10 years too, worked for Australian aid projects as an interpreter and as an office manager in Ruteng, Bajawa and Aceh. I was educated in Ruteng and Australia (Tasmania), but my heart has always been in Ruteng among the local Manggarai people. Because I have been to the main tourist sites myself, I am able to provide a great deal of information about Ruteng and the surrounding areas. And, if you wish, I can organise visits to interesting places for you, for instance to villages which most tourists don't ever get to experience ...
