Where you’ll be

Melissi, Greece

Our village, Melissi, is to be found 30Klm west of Corinth, along the coast of the Corinthian Gulf, between regional towns Kiato and the more touristical Xylokastro. It belongs to the municipality of Xylokastro and It has about 1,000 permanent inhabitants, who are mainly engaged in agriculture and tourism.
It’s name (Melissi = beehive) comes from the wild bees which had their hives in rock, nearby the village Church.
Melissi upper village is really worth a walk by visitors as it’s built on steep mountain slopes offering magnificent views to the gulf of Corinth.
The landscape from the upper farming plateau is dominated by old olive groves and picturesque vineyards.
Village’s orthodox church with its beautiful frescoes in the original byzantine style is a ‘must see’. Especially during Easter holidays and the holy week the church becomes a sensational experience for all visitors.

Xylokastro:
The cosmopolitan town of Xylokastro is just 4km away, waiting to entertain you with its wild nightlife, charming beaches and famous pine forest next to the beach.
In Xylokastro you can find open air cinemas, sports facilities, a yacht marina, all sorts of small shops as well as many night clubs, bars, restaurants and cafes. At the eastern side of Xylokastro town extends the beautiful “aesthetic forest” which is a protected park of pines that runs along the pebble beach and it dates back over 300 years! It’s an ideal place of typical mediterranean beauty for walking and jogging while enjoying the scent of various local flowers and plants.
The park is mentioned by the famous Greek poet Kostas Karyotakis as “green piece of coast of the fatherland” and was a place of inspiration for another prominent modern Greek poet, Angelos Sikelianos.

Zireia Mountain:
The exceptionally beautiful Ziria is the second highest mountain in the Peloponnesus and the favourite destination of mountain climbers, hikers and tourists. It consists of Mediterranean highlands with bushes, steep cliffs, sycamore and coniferous forests, a great flora with over a hundred species.
Around the main mountain range you can find many small traditional villages, like Trikala, Evrostini, Velina or Goura. The biggest of the villages of this area, Trikala, is consisted by three settlements; Kato (lower), Mesaia (middle) and Ano (upper) Trikala.
The highlight of the area is the artificial lake “Doxa” with the small Byzantine era church in the middle of it.
The mythological reference is strong and always present in this area. Here is the lake Stymphalia where Hercules killed the Stymphalian Birds with his bow to accomplish his sixth labour. The modern environmental museum of stymphalia is a must place to visit too!
A great network of paths exists some of which lead either to the Flabouritsa valley, a unique biotope protected by the NATURA network, either to the 3 local lakes – each one with its own history or the mountain’s summit where the breathtaking view spans from mountain Taygetus to mountain Olympus. Trekkers can also have a rest in one of the 3 organised lodges in the area. Hermes’ Cave from on of the shelters, a path leads to Hermes’ cave that stands out for its numerous chambers full of colourful stalactites. Great care should be taken when exploring the cave, and special equipment might be necessary
In the Ziria Sports Centre, 10km far from the Ano Trikala, you will find a small ski centre for the winter with 2 ski lifts and ski/snowboard rent, chalet, ATV rental, and walking/biking paths for the summer.
Finally mountain biking, paintball and horse riding at the Centre of Free Riding in the village “Rethi” are some other options that Ziria can offer you.
Every August there is a Music Festival is being held at Zireia Sports Centre, a marathon music festival with the participation of many, and not just rock, exceptional bands.

The ground floor of the house (totaly independent property) is inhabited by the owners, a trully pleasant and pure hospitable couple, that will be more than happy to welcome you and your family, and provide all necessary information and help, you will need!
The huge garden is communal, and provide a relaxing atmosphere in an environment composed with olive trees, flowers and spacious surfaces awaiting for your kids to play, as there is a small lawn surface with a goalpost, and an improvisational basket facility.
