There area few places in the world where i find peace and beauty at the same time, 1 st my own outlook at my lotus pond, 2 nd looking at our japanes house designed house looking at the ocean, 3 rd the Zen rock garden in Kyoto and finally coming over the top of the mountain ( the hiking way) at Muchu Picchu. Now there is a 4 th place, the Johnston area of Vermont during the Fall season. After driving from Quebec ( what joy the customs officer at the USA border) we arrived late in the afternoon, being met by 3 people, 1 to show us arround, 1 to pick flowers for the accomandation( thanks) and 1 chappie to mow the lawns for us, could not complain at all. The bed was lovely , the view fantastic and it was just haven. There where some very minor items , like the oven did nor work but that was all, my wife made herself quikly at home in the kitchen. The place was build on 1985 and has a partly covered earth roof ( way ahead of its time) We went for lovely drives around the area its day but could not wait to come back to sit in the easy chairs on the lawn with a coffee or ( being australians ) a glass of wine. The sad thing is that it appeared that the place is now for sale and i hope that the next owners will redesign the large unused area,s upstair ( 3 more bedroom s and rumpes room ) and keep the place as and air B&B ( we would be back) There where goats , a vegi garden in season, lakes to swim in, ( a canoe would be good), lovely hiking trails around the area, wonderfull book store in the town, Sterling wine shop and food store even a church service on sunday, all close by.

This is a very special place with stunning views and incredible gardens/landscaping. We stayed for 3 nights with our two young children and it made a perfect base for having some peace and quiet, cozy fires, and home cooked meals while also being able to get to the Stowe area very easily. The main space is very spacious with a mid century zen feel and kitchen fully equipped. As we had our kids sleeping in the main space with us, we did not use the adjoining (access outside across a breezeway) 2 bedrooms but both looked newer, clean, and cozy. Our two year old son loved meeting the goats, chickens, and cat on the property and running around on the hills. Thank you for sharing this spot with us!

The location is terrific. The views and the grounds are spectacular! Exploring the property is wonderful enough, but it's also close to other adventures, like hiking Mt. Mansfield and cycling along the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail. The place was used as a retreat for many years before it became a rental, and it still feels like a retreat - very peaceful. The main house has very high ceilings, large open spaces, and a lot of stone. We ended up making a fire each night to take off the chill. My husband and I stayed in the main house, and our daughters (ages 14 & 16) stayed in the smaller house attached by a walkway. The smaller house was once a garage, but has been converted into housing. The rooms in that house are smaller and cozier. We ate in a lot (plenty of fresh, organic veg available in town), and the kitchen had everything we needed.

This is the most magical place we've ever stayed. We spent 7 days here in August, traveling with four adults and four kids (each under age 6) and we had an incredible week. The house itself is large and offers stunning views of the surrounding gardens, distant mountains and the valley below. The home is a little older and some people may find it little on the funky side...this was no problem for us, but something worth pointing out if you were expecting a pristine interior and are uncomfortable living a little closer to nature. We embraced the quirks of the home and actually found it quite comfortable -- clean linens and pillows, tidy bedrooms, a well-appointed kitchen, a fantastic soaking tub in the master bathroom -- and our children loved exploring the many rooms and levels throughout the week. There is no TV in the house but there is wi-fi (something to think about if TV is a big deal to you and/or your family). The grounds surrounding the home are absolutely stunning. When we arrived, a rainstorm was clearing out and we saw a giant double rainbow spanning across the valley below. The ponds are teeming with frogs and salamanders and other (harmless) critters and we loved our morning and evening walks with the kids looking for new animal neighbors. We also lucked out to have visited at the exact right time to catch the blueberry patch in full glory, and were able to pick a couple fresh Macintosh apples from the orchard at the top of the hill, all of which were delicious. There is nothing better than a foraged breakfast! The community that owns and maintains the home - most importantly Monique and Max - could not have been better hosts. Monique was communicative about the home and answered a number of my (annoying?) questions prior to our stay. When we arrived she gave us a tour of the home, annex and grounds and even showed us where to find some hiking trails nearby. One night we had a big electrical storm that knocked out power for a few hours and Monique came by right away with candles. If you're looking for a unique, mellow place to unplug, unwind, slow down and/or appreciate all the beauty northern Vermont has to offer, this is truly the place for you.
