Apartment Three, is a charming first floor one-bedroom apartment in the market town of Haddington in East Lothian, recently renovated to combine the old with the new – including some original Victorian features, and quirky contemporary details–with the number ‘3’ a recurring feature throughout.
The apartment originally formed part of a larger Victorian house, which had been converted into flats long ago by a local merchant, who wanted to provide accommodation for those visiting the corn market.

The walk-through
Let’s take a closer look at this unique and charming property which has been recently refurbished by the owner Lorna:Let’s take a closer look at this unique and charming property:

As you reach the apartment three from the main street, you’ll enter through the vennel (an internal passageway) which takes you through to a traditional stone-walled cottage garden.

The garden itself feels a bit like you’ve gone back in time. Venture up the stone steps onto the grassy lawn where there is a picnic table to enjoy a glass of wine, a cuppa or some al fresco dining! The mature garden is well-planted, and a delightful place in any season, with spring flowers, summer blooms, autumn hues and winter evergreens.

You are welcome to pick some fresh herbs, including mint and rosemary. There’s also a washing line, where you’ll be able to hang up your washing (weather permitting).

Up towards the top of the garden, there’s a large holly tree, which is decorated with lights at Christmas. The garden is shared but private, and on the right-hand-side of the garden, you’ll see some interesting old Victorian brick out-buildings - formerly the old wash house!

Heading back down the garden, you’ll find a door with the number ‘three’ on it. Once you enter through this door, a quick walk upstairs will take you to a communal hall area, where you’ll see the main door to apartment three.

Once you enter the property, you’ll find yourself in the main hallway, where you’ll immediately spot some interestingly numbered Victorian coat hooks to your right; these were reclaimed from an old school. The hall also includes a fine oval silver mirror, central heating controls, and convenient shoe storage.

On your left, a door will take you to the contemporary kitchen/living area, where the first thing you’ll notice is the original fireplace, which has been recently reinstated and fitted with a gorgeous mantel made from reclaimed wood. A table and two chairs fit neatly into the recess when not in use.

Above the fireplace, an original 1960s Bernard Buffet poster, featuring ‘Bread and Wine’, adds a bit of extra character.

To the right, there is a comfortable double sofa with cushions, and two tall cabinets containing plates, glasses, cutlery, and mats. On the other side of the table, an artisan rocking chair and stool makes the perfect place to relax and put your feet up - or even watch some TV!

The kitchen is fully-equipped with everything you’ll need for your stay (including a washing machine, kettle, toaster, chopping boards and fridge with ice box).

Walking back into the hallway, you’ll come to the bedroom on the left, which has a very tranquil, clean and contemporary feel. This room features an unusual silver and crystal metal chandelier - designed by a local maker - which sometimes casts shadows and miniature rainbow colours around the room.

There’s a comfortable mattress with an intricate metal bedstead, painted cream and silver, and white bedside tables at either side. A TV is also included in this room, along with an old ‘arts and crafts’ type wardrobe with central mirror, a shelved cupboard, chest of drawers and a useful small desk.

Here you’ll also find two extra chairs, which can be moved to the dining area if required.

The bedroom features old wooden shutters, painted white for a crisp, clean feel, looking out into a stunning view of Angle Park with its tall trees and birdlife. The linen curtains provide a nice blue contrast, finished off with white voile behind them.

Back to the hall again, you’ll see the shower room on your left. It houses a large, quadrant shower enclosure, newly installed and complete with power shower. The contrasting grey and white tiles give this room a super modern feel. There’s a heated towel rail, a useful shelf for towels, and under-window storage cupboard - made from reclaimed wood.

Things to do in the area

The Royal Burgh of Haddington makes for a great base, with charming independent shops, restaurants or cafes - not forgetting the glorious East Lothian coastline, where you’ll find some truly stunning beaches. It’s also just a 20-mile bus or car journey to the city of Edinburgh!

There’s a bus stop just two minutes from the apartment, with regular buses into the centre of Edinburgh taking approximately 40 minutes.

East Lothian is a cyclist’s dream (with lots of little country roads that are perfect for bikes), but it’s also great for walkers. One of our favourite walks from apartment three takes you to the banks of the River Tyne, just 5 - 10 minutes away.

You can then walk back round into town past the amazing St. Mary’s Church, and spend a lovely afternoon at the Waterside Inn, where you can sit outside with a refreshing drink in idyllic surroundings - you can even feed the swans and ducks.

What to expect from your stay

Upon arrival, you’ll receive a welcome gift and a handwritten note from Lorna. You’ll also find a welcome book, local menus and recommendations, and a ‘things to do’ box - including all you need to know for your stay.

Apartment three is a charming property, and while you will sometimes meet other residents on the stairs and in the garden, it’s a relaxed and friendly place to stay.

Other things to note

The owner Lorna lives in the apartment next door and when she's around she will be delighted to help with any aspect of your stay. At all other times I will be available should you need anything.
