This two-storey, quaint and very functional house in the center of the traditional village of Avdou is the perfect getaway for a real Cretan experience. It can sleep five people: there is a single bed on the ground floor along with a WC, a large double bed on the first floor with en suite bathroom, and another double bed on the open-plan second floor.

The space

The village itself is delightful, with small, renovated homes retaining the traditional style, cobblestone streets with signs commemorating out the history of each shop and an idyllic little square complete with a huge, shady plane tree. The people are super-friendly and, in the summer, the village can be quite lively. It’s located near the Lasithi mountain plateau, next to the Aposelemi Dam Lake, a 40-minute drive from the main city of Heraklion.
To get there, you take the highway from Heraklion towards Agios Nikolaos. After 20 minutes (about 20 km), at the large junction, turn right toward Kastelli (You’ll see a yellow road sign) and then again right toward Lasithi Mountain Plateau. After 3 km you 'will see a junction, you continue left toward Lasithi Mountain Plateau (not toward Kasteli). Continue along the winding mountain road toward Lasithi Mountain Plateau and you will pass the lake on your left hand. Continue and you will find Avdou. On the right hand you will see a very big church. Opposite the church there is a street who leads (after 50 meters) to the center of the village, you see there a huge plane tree and on the left hand a Supermarket, you go right and, after 50 meters, you see the house...
There are a variety of activities you can do here: hang-gliding from Mount Louloudaki, horse-riding at the nearby Odysseia Stables, hiking in the Rosa Gorge or around Aposelemi Lake. A visit to the impressive Agia Fotini Cave is a must, where you will be awed by the stalagmites and stalactites in the last room of the cave, which has been converted into a shrine to Saint Fotini.
Delicious Cretan food at very reasonable prices can be had at Avdou’s tavernas, but also in the neighboring villages of Gonies, Potamies and Askoi. In the summer, the local cultural society organizes a wide range of events—concerts, dance performances and theatrical plays—in a spacious venue on the edge of the village.
The fantastic Aquasplash water park is a short drive and the beautiful beaches of Hersonissos and Malia are 14 kilometers away.

We stayed in Elena's more than lovely stone house in Avdou with three persons (couple and a 4 year old child). The home is very tastefully decorated and has everything you need for a nice stay. This place is great if you want to be surrounded by locals. We loved to watch the old people walking down the streets from our little balcony and loved how they gathered every night, sitting together on the bench near the water well. Avdou is very authentic, simple, sober and the people who live there are nice, friendly and calm. It's worlds apart from the more touristic Chersonissos and Malia for example. You really need a car to see the area and to go to any beach you have to drive at least 30 minutes. No problem, but something to keep in mind. We really loved our stay in Avdou and can recommend it to anyone to visit this beautiful part of Crete and especially to stay in Elena's little fairytale house.

Small house but cosy and clean. Owners are good people. In the night we had some problems with the noise but otherwise it is ok if you are used with small plsces.

Response from Elena:
As we mentioned, it is a small, typical cretan village house wholy renovated with characteristical architectural details. Throughout the year it is totally quiet. Between 1-17 August there are everywhere in Crete, as in the rest of Greece, a lot of cultural events and concerts, so it can be noisy, as the house lies in the middle of the village. On the other hand one can have at this time an authentic cretan experience.

Elena's place is a truly wonderful cretan village experience. You are made to feel so welcome ( Elena bought us food and invited us to join her family and friends) and the home is so beautiful, with unique details (by Elena herself) that give it the wow factor. Elena and Nikos are fabulous hosts and cant do enough for you, to which we are very thankful for. I would highly recommend if you have a car.

Elena and Nikos place is wonderful! If you like to be in a small village, away from other tourists and get an impression of the village life it is perfect. We had a car, so it was easy to travel around the island and see some nice spots Elena and Nikos reccomended to us. We were delighted to meet them and get such a warm welcome. If you want to have a really fine meal, then go to the Taverna from Maria and Costa in Gonies. It's just a 15min walk from Avdou.

This village house stole our hearts. I can't say enough good things about it.. it was beautiful, clean and tidy, and everything about it was convenient. There were two complete bathrooms, super comfortable beds, AC, cute kitchen and an adorable balcony where we ate our breakfast. The village is traditional with a tavern, cafe and store. The house is for someone who wants to experience the cretan village, not for people who want to constantly take sevetal trips back and forth to the bigger towns such as Herakleion or agios nikolaos. We used an hour each way to these places. Still, this place is an experience and an attraction in its own way. The hosts and Nikos were very helful and suggested many things. I will definitely recommend a stay to anyone with a car in Creta.
