The house was built between 1906 and 1935 by the trading company Tang&Riis and used as a workshop, staff house etc. It was renovated in 2010 with kitchen and bathroom upgraded to modern standards. The house sits on a cliff by the seashore with a spectacular view over Breidafjordur bay.

Hellissandur is one of the oldest fishing villages in Iceland and it's history dates back to the 15th Century. Now it resides about 400 villagers.

Hellissandur, Iceland

Hellissandur was once a major fishing centre and Rif was one of the main trading ports on Snaefellsnes peninsula. Most of the villages fishing fleet is now based at Rif. These two villages are only 3 km apart.

The Maritime Museum at Hellisssandur has displays that include Iceland´s oldest rowboat, built in 1826.

The beautiful beach Krossavík, with a mixture of sand, black pebbles and lava and rich in birdlife and history, lies west of the village, perfect for an evening or morning hike.

The area between Hellissandur and Rif is a bird-lovers paradise and one of the largest nesting sites of arctic terns in Icleand.

The distance between Reykjavík and Hellissandur is 195 km and is about 2,5 hours drive.

Service in the area: A hotel, camping site, gas station, small grocery store, restaurant, café and a maritime museum. The Freezer is a theatre and cultural centre in the village Rif 3 km away. They offer live events every night during the summer. www.thefreezerhostel.com
