Our home is a family-built, 70-year-old farmhouse in a private valley of 80 acres, an easy one-mile walk to the ocean. We cook healthy, local food for dinner & breakfast (meals inc. in room price) and invite you to join us. We prepare menus (read reviews) to accommodate guests' dietary restrictions. No visible (or audible) neighbors. Dark, quiet nights; clear spring water. The room is large, with comfy queen bed, private bath & deck, reading/tv room, view of creek & forest. Children welcome.
The property is off the road, sheltered and lush. The house is filled with history; the decor is original vintage. Our property, 80 acres, is lush and filled with birds, deer, critters of all kinds, plus our resident emu and two alpacas. (Bob, the emu, is friendly and strangely affectionate.) John bakes fresh, whole wheat bread daily, makes ice-cream as often as needed. A local farmer delivers the eggs. All meals are cooked and baked "from scratch." We prepare to dietary restrictions, as requested (veg/vegan, GF, lactose-free, etc.) We can put a cot in the adjacent reading room for a third person in your party. Private bathroom includes tub. Queen bed has memory-foam mattress. Deck has private entrance. This space was originally built as a family/separate space for a live-in mother/child.
Guests have access to the living/dining room, the kitchen, the laundry facilities -- everything in and out of the house except the other guest bedroom we list and our upstairs bedroom/sitting room. Our listings (we have one other room listed) can accommodate 4 adults and 2-3 children (depending on age). Family booking for two full bedrooms/two private bathrooms/full dinners/full breakfasts is $170/night, which we send as a special offer when you book either room as a family/friends group. Accommodations: access to common rooms: living room, dining room, deck, laundry facilities, 80 private acres of wilderness to explore. Lots of reading nooks, living room is comfortable, good reading lights, fireplace.
Interaction with guests
We live on the premises and are about most of the time, although we both also work outside the home. We have a library of local brochures, tourist info, and "insider" local history (if asked). We're there if you want to hang out (usually cooking), and we're in our own quarters if you don't. We eat with our guests. This is a friendly, happy, low-key, high-humor place with good food, good books, good wine, and good friends.
Other things to note
The property is beautiful, the food is healthy, the beds are super comfy. No close neighbors, 1/4 mile off a country road, no traffic noise. Here's the downside, according to some guests: Our private quarters are upstairs and the stairs creak. The very old dog, Frank, sleeps upstairs & sometime has to go out in the middle of the night. In "weather" -- and we can have Big Weather -- the house shudders. It's a 70-year-old house (built from recycled redwood and war surplus by family and friends): there can be drafts (although we have good central heating & use it). Coyotes howl, cell-phones really don't work (but email/text does and our Wifi is good.) There are unexpected creature visitations (raccoons, bobcats, squirrels, eagles and hawks, possum, bats, rabbits, chipmunks, porcupines, deer, foxes and a bear). The 4-mile road to our house from Ferndale is a country road, full of deer after dark.
The good stuff: Water: fresh spring water to drink & in a jug in your room; hot & lots for showers. We welcome children (cots, sofas, toddler bed, etc.). Lots of room in the suite for portable cribs, etc (bring your own). We have an industrial-strength swing set, hammocks, 2 alpacas and an emu. Dog is sweet. You will sleep well. Fireplace, curl-up reading spaces. Variety of teas, kettle always on. Food is good, often very very good, and plenty. Everything made "from scratch." We accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions, per individual advance request. Regardless of your age, this is a visit to grandparents who adore you and who will fix you pancakes in the middle of the night if that will make you happy.
No form of any kind of smoking in the house. No third-party bookings.
Let's talk about dogs. You can bring your dog IF your dog sleeps in your room at night and is not aggressive with other animals. Please inquire first if you have a breed that may be in danger in a rural environment. (Cattle chasers; very small dogs that are prey for raptors, e.g.) Please inquire first if you have 2 dogs.
Our mission statement: We are dedicated to helping build a world house of love and laughter where each person, unique and respected, has hope and opportunity.
