Where you’ll be

Dhrangadhra, Gujarat, India

Given the central location, you can visit the salt-pans in the Little Rann of Kutch and see and understand the salt farming process. The salt season lasts from October to May, during which period, the salt farmers migrate from the villages to live in the desert. You can also visit the weaver community in the village and see how they work on the looms in their homes. Spend a day like a royalty visiting the palace of Dhrangadhra.

You can also visit the Little Rann of Kutch, which is home to the endangered Indian Wild Ass (Equushemionuskhur). This is the only place in the world where this species of the Indian Wild Ass is found. If you’re lucky, you can also spot the Blue Bull and a lot of migratory birds such as; saras (cranes), Indian flamingoes, and three species of pelicans.

You’ll be able to see all this during the visit to the salt-pans and also see the beautiful sun set from the vast land of the dry desert. At the stone mines, you can see how stone statues are made. During the month of August – September, a traditional fair is organized here. We’ll be happy to arrange the visits for you at an extra cost!

I was working part-time at an embroidery workshop to support my education when my friend Yogini introduced me to SEWA(Self Employed Women’s Association) which I then joined as a Coordinator. SEWA organizes self-employed women workers across 13 Indian States in the informal economy towards two major goals of full employment and self-reliance in India.

Initially, my SEWA jobs helped me complete my education. But since then, I have become a part of the SEWA family for the last 18 years. I help women find solutions to the problems regarding their work, be it government associations, loans or technology related queries. I initiate partnerships with the private and government sector organizations whenever we require any support. My husband works in a workshop and has always supported me at every step.

I am managing the Airbnb accommodation at the DhrangadhraCommunity center. It represents 50,000 salt-pan workers in the Little Rann of Kutch. Come stay with us and immerse yourself in the Gujarati way of life. Experience the local art and interact with the local communities!
