A cozy retreat built around 2 Victorian train carriages and overlooking the sea. Perfect for swimmers, bird watchers, foodies, star gazers, geologists and, of course, train enthusiasts. Escape the city (only two hours from London), feast on Selsey crab, snuggle up by the fire in winter, spend the day searching for fossils, snorkel in the summer or spot rare birds in Pagham harbour (a 10 minute walk).

The space
While the grownups gaze out at the view from upstairs, the kids can play in the large downstairs hall (there is table football and plenty of toys). The whole family can convene to crack into crab and lobster at the dinner table. Then head out to the beach by crossing a quiet road or walk up to the Lifeguard station. The main bedroom is located at the back of the house, and has a double bed and an en suite bathroom. There is also a double room, a single room and a bunk room, as well as a shower room. The kitchen has been recently re-decorated and looks out onto the garden which is great for lunch on sunny days. It is stocked with herbs and over-run by hydrangeas, black berries and plums in the summer.

Selsey, England, United Kingdom

Selsey is a close-knit community with a thriving fishing industry (Selsey crab is coveted by top chefs) and a busy high street with butchers, bakers and plenty of pubs. The beach is clean (East Beach is pebbly but there are sandy beaches on West Beach at low tide and West Wittering is only a 10 minute's drive). People come from all over the world to bird watch at Pagham harbour. It is well located to explore the Sussex Downs, Chichester (its Cathedral, theatres and museums), Goodwood (a race track and also home to a great vintage festival), Bosham (famous for its sailing and beauty), the gardens of West Dean, among many others.
