The neighborhood

Alleppey, or Alappuzha is famed across the world for its vast scenic undulating network of freshwater lakes, lagoons, canals, and rivers that comprise the backwaters.

While the freshwater backwaters are settled on the eastern side amongst lush velvet green paddy fields and are interspersed with small quaint villages, the Arabian sea forms another natural azure border on the western perimeter.

Thus, thousands of International and domestic tourists visit Alleppey every year. The normal tourist season begins by mid October and ends by mid May. Although, another world renowned event, the snake boat race regatta attracts throngs of tourists in the 2nd week of August, giving a fillip to tourism even in the off season.

The secret beach is 20 minutes drive north of Alleppey. A quiet beach situated by the side of a fishing village, it has sugary white sand and rows of coconut palms that fringe this picture perfect beach.

The Mannarsala Nagaraja temple is 40 minutes drive south of Alleppey. An ages old temple dedicated to women, it is a sprawling, atmospheric place with stone carvings and figuries of sakes all over the temple courtyard.

Kutanad, a scenic village along the backwaters is known as the rice bowl of Kerala.

Coir industry, fishing- both marine and freshwater as well as traditional industries based on coir, marine products and handlooms, toddy tapping are the other idustries prevailing in Alappuzha.

Over the last ten to 15 years, tourism, and specifically the houseboat industry has risen to establish itself as one of the major emerging industries in Alappuzha.

Aleppey, like the rest pf Kerala has only 2 seasons. The rainy season and summer. The monsoon breaks out over Kerala in the 1st week of June. June and July is peak of monsoon when it rains daily. The monsoon, on the wane extends to mid December. January to May are the generally dry summer months. It is humid during the summer.

Johnson's was honestly even better than what we had expected! The location is perfect, Johnson himself is great as well as his staff, on location food is awesome, and the bathtubs on the terrace are loooovely. The house dog is also a total lover. Although Johnson was very nice and gave us an extra router to use, I must say that the wifi wasn't great. Although he does have a computer to use on location that may have a more direct connection, didn't use though.

THX ladies, You were so nice. Long to get guests like you. Unfortunately, I have had some very uncool guests on airbnb this season. Hope from now on, there will be cooler guests like you around. Defitely try to put photos of my boat on airbnb. Johnson

We stayed at Johnsons homestay before a night on his houseboat - this worked very well as we were able to avoid the potentially stressful houseboat booking process and it was all arranged for us. The staff at the homestay were friendly and helpful, for example one of the girls helped me find cigarettes near by and Johnson let us come back and use the wifi at the homestay after the houseboat trip as we had time to kill before our bus to Alleppey. He also dropped us at the bus station which was kind. Thank you for our stay, it was perfect for us.

This is basic accommodation in Allepey. The host, Johnson cannot be faulted on his communication or friendliness. He was obliging and very helpful. The property itself is pretty tired and the cleanliness, though average for budget accommodation in India, could be improved. The kitchen/breakfast area was not the cleanest and the breakfast itself could have been improved. Lest this sound too negative, I should reiterate that this was largely at a level of (or just below) the average budget accommodation in India that we experienced.

Hi, I am Johnson Gilbert. I converted my home into one of the pioneer, premier Alleppey homestays. 'Johnson's' is listed in International guidebooks and is now well established among the top Kerala home stays.

I understood that the main reason tourists visit Alleppey/ Alappuzha is for the backwaters and for beach stays. We are fortunate that we can satisfy both the needs to our guests as I have a houseboat, offer cheaper interactive canoe tours, and our guesthouse is close to the town beach.

Other than the backwaters, we also arrange visits to the Secret beach and the Snake temple in Alleppey. It gives further impetus for my guests to spend more time in Alleppey.

Since the last 10 years, we conduct a special event for our guests to watch the Kerala snake boat race. It’s getting bigger every year.

There's an Ayurveda massage parlour a minute's walk from our homestay and we offer for our lady guests an inhouse beautician.

We have a free pick up service for our guests on arrival in Alleppey. And you can pay for any service here with your credit card as we have a swipe machine.
