The Dude's Abode is a small, 1969 A-Frame in the small oceanfront community of the Alpine Chalets. We are set in a forested, high-bank oceanfront 7-Acre setting at Otter Rock, along with 10 other privately owned chalets. The community shares a private path with access to the best surfing beach in the area!

Restored to a 1969 vibe, fans of vintage A-Frame villages, surfers, and free spirits will love this spot.

The space

An original "tiny house" village at the beach, this 656 Square foot A-Frame Chalet has a kitchen, living room with vaulted ceiling (open to the loft), bedroom, and ensuite bath on the main level. The upper level loft has 2 twin beds, a built in desk, and a peek of the ocean framed by shore pines out the upper window. The lower bedroom has a queen bed.

Loft access is by a ladder with rails, so this would not be suitable for a toddler or a child who is not a good stair-climber yet. The ensuite bath is shared, so access for all guests through the main (downstairs) bedroom. It's a classic cabin-style, for families and close friends who don't mind sharing space. We have restored this home to its 1969 look.

You'll love the location, the coziness, the high ceilings. The Dude's Abode is good for couples, solo adventurers, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets).

Guest access

The seven acre grounds include 2 firepits and barbecue areas, park benches, a swing-set, grassy and forested areas. Most of this part of the coast has steep staircases for beach access, so you'll enjoy the stroll down through the beach on a meandering path, with just a few stairs at beach level. Access is about a mile from public access either direction, so this area is much less crowded than other beaches any time of year. Beautiful long view of the beach, from Devils Punchbowl to the North to Yaquina Head lighthouse to the South.

Interaction with guests

We won't be in your space during your stay, but are often nearby and have staff who can help in the event of an emergency. There is a groundskeeper (Lance) who lives full time on the Alpine Chalets property, in the event of emergency or security issues.

Other things to note

2 parking spaces in assigned parking space. Driveway is the far south end of Otter Crest Loop, marked "Alpine Chalets." 10 minute drive South to Newport, 10 minute drive North to Depoe Bay.

John and Heather have it dialed. This place is amazing, great location, great beach, if you have kids who want to learn to surf, Otter Rock is the best place in Oregon. Tightly organized, the Dude's Abode is stellar.

Great location if you want to explore up and down the coast, which you should most definitely do! The private beach is virtually deserted and wonderful if you are looking to REALLY get away.

First of all I would like to highlight the perfect location - right in the middle of everything you would want to see/do on the coast. The decor is fun, kids enjoyed it very much. We have two kids and they loved having the loft room all to themselves. Overall very clean and lovely place to stay. Thank you John & Heather!

John and Heather are such wonderful hosts! We have had such a great experience at Branholm and The Dudes Abode. Their description of both locations are so accurate. I especially love the organization and cleanliness. Their rates are very reasonable. The kitchen, the bathrooms, bedrooms and living rooms have all the necessities and luxuries of home. Extra bedding, toiletries and towels are in full stock. The kitchen is fully loaded and they always have coffee! A major plus for us. The beds are always comfortable and plenty of pillows are always provided. And the decor is spectacular!

We had a lovely two nights in this adorable place. Comfy bed and linens, lots of little special touches. It was perfectly situated for our needs. Unfortunately we didn't get to enjoy the beach as much as we had hoped because of the rainy weather but it was beautiful and very easy to access. Hope to return!

This is a fun, cool place to stay, just above an amazing beach. Enjoy a beach walk to the Devil's Punchbowl, then come back and cook up a dinner while the Big Lebowski plays on TV-- enjoying shore breezes the whole time. We really enjoyed our stay with our dog.

The dude's abode does not disappoint. John and Heather have thought of everything. The space is cozy and well thought out. And proximity to the beach is fantastic. It is a little close to the HWY, but the hosts thoughtfully provide ear plugs if needed! Thanks for a fantastic stay.

We found an amazing "super 70s" custom home in 2013, restored, preserved, designed and curated the interior to create our dream home and share it with others. "Brannholm" is our love letter to the 1970s slow pace with water, sun, fun, and long conversations by the fire--the perfect place to build your memories with family and friends. In 2016, we found a 1969 A-Frame. An intimate cabin in an oceanfront A-Frame village with strolling grounds to the best surfing beach in Oregon, we restored and designed "The Dude's Abode" for couples and small groups who dig the "summer of love" vibe. We offer beautiful and nostalgic space for your getaway, whether its a week of boating in the summer, a fall fishing trip, a winter storm-watching feast, or a spring hiking trip.
