[VEUILLEZ CONSULTER MES COMMENTAIRES EN FRANÇAIS CI-DESSOUS.] I stayed at Malika’s apartment for one night at the end of September 2017. (Firstly, I have to mention that Malika is extremely accommodating, I booked the room less than 12 hours before my arrival in Almaty.) The closest intersection to Malika’s apartment is Popov and Sholom Aleikhem (ул. Попова и ул. Шолом Алейхем). If you are at this intersection, you will see four roughly identical apartment blocks. Malika’s apartment is in the block ***behind*** the apartment block at the intersection of Popov and Sholom Aleikhem. (Despite the address, Malika’s apartment building is NOT on Balzak St. (ул. Бальзака). Once you get to the apartment block, you can take either elevator to the 16th floor. Leaving the elevator banks, turn right, turn right again, step inside the threshold, and Malika’s apartment will be on your right (there is no number on the door). Malika’s apartment is quite spacious, as is the room therein that she rents out. The bed is roughly full-size and could comfortably sleep two average-sized individuals. The bed itself is comfortable and I never had any issues with the temperature in the apartment despite the outside temperature being in the 30s (degrees Fahrenheit) during my stay. I cannot speak highly enough of Malika and her roommate, Gulzaida, as hosts. Malika and Gulzaida are both very attractive, working professionals in their 20’s and are fun to hang around. They are both Kazakh and have both lived outside of Almaty thus, if you are planning to spend time in Kazakhstan outside of Almaty, both Malika and Gulzaida are great resources and are more than willing to share tips and pointers about other regions of the country (including, but not limited to, Astana). Malika and Gulzaida are both well-traveled and its wonderfully apparent that both enjoy meeting new people and learning about the world from foreigners and people with different points of view. After running some errands around Almaty, Gulzaida treated me to homemade chicken (the chicken was honestly very tasty, especially given that anyone who’s spent time in the region would know that Central Asians are very spice-averse), tea, and cherry jam from her home region in northern Kazakhstan. After listening to some Q-pop with Gulzaida, Malika took me to William Lawson, a bar in the center city, before calling it a night. Even though I am no stranger to Almaty, and have always enjoyed my experiences there, I must say that this trip will always stand out due in large part to Malika’s and Gulzaida’s collective hospitality. It was nice to be able to spend time with real Kazakh people and learn about and see Almaty through their eyes. I recommend, without hesitation, a stay with Malika and Gulzaida.

Comfortable room in a nice apartment on the 16th floor with great view of both the city and the mountains. The building is in more of a residential area but busy streets with buses+trolleybuses, supermarkets and a good lagman restaurant are nearby. As this is not a "professional" airbnb, check-in is not all-around the clock. but for that Malika is very nice and she showed some nice places in the city. So if you want a more non-hotel like experience, it is really recommended!
