Masseria Don Mattia is a beautiful villa with a swimming pool near the sea of Castro, on the Adriatic coast of Puglia. An oasis of peace in the heart of the Salento countryside where you can immerse yourself, letting yourself be seduced by the breath of the trees and the surrounding nature. Ideal for those who love the countryside but at the same time want to be close to the sea. The property is very spacious and well-organized. An excellent solution for large groups thanks to the various common areas and the practical distribution of the interior spaces.
The space
Once a country residence (dating back to 1737) of the local noble family Bacile di Castiglione, it has been reborn after a skilful and careful conservative restoration that has left the historical and typical characteristics of the property unchanged, thus giving it a warmth and a very elegant atmosphere in its simplicity and authenticity.
The farm is located between Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca, thus representing an excellent starting point for exploring Salento, its small and characteristic villages where you can still breathe the authentic atmosphere of Salento life; where you can go to buy fresh fruits and vegetables directly from local farmers or from the various open markets.
Masseria Don Mattia is surrounded by olive trees and, on two sides, by ancient shady oak groves. The entrance door to the property opens to a passage in a beautiful and large paved courtyard, where you are immediately captivated by the ancient charm of the dwellings of the past. The effect is extraordinary! Continuing through an arch under the house, you enter the beautiful garden overlooking the countryside, with several shaded pergola areas, colorful cluster wisteria, various relaxation corners with masonry sofas and cushions, and a dining table for romantic outdoor dinners. Just a few dozen meters from the house, in a detached area, there is the swimming pool with a large equipped sunbathing area and a small oak forest that surrounds it, enclosing it and giving it a pleasant area of shade and coolness, priceless during the hot summer days.
Furnished with antique family furniture, the house is spread over two floors: the ground floor and the first floor. The ground floor includes a large dining room with an open kitchen and fireplace, an entrance, a living room, 1 single bedroom, 2 double bedrooms and 1 double bedroom. Each room has its own bathroom/shower. Access to the bedrooms is shaded by lilac wisteria pergolas that create a romantic and light atmosphere. On the first floor, on the other hand, there is the master double bedroom with a bathroom with a bathtub and an exclusive terrace, characterized by beautiful and large star vaults that give it character and elegance. All rooms are independent, therefore not connected from the inside but accessible only from the garden, thus guaranteeing privacy and autonomy to each space. In particular, the single room is detached from all the other rooms on the ground floor.
More than 20 meters from the main building is the annex, which is very charming and intimate, usually occupied by the owners in August, while in the other months of the year it can be rented and/or added to the main building.
The farm is isolated, in the utmost silence but with a small village (Spongano) just 2 km away, which can also be reached by bicycle along a charming country road. Nearby there is also a shopping center usually open on Sundays, convenient for arrivals and departures during weekends. A 15-minute drive, however, you can reach the nearest marina, the seaside village of Castro with its port and the picturesque ancient village with the castle, where the largest statue of the classical era so far found depicting Athena, a Greek deity, was recently discovered.
We like it because:
- The garden of the farmhouse contains the scents and colors typical of the Salento countryside with its prickly pears, oak forest, citrus grove and flower beds of aromatic plants.
- The bedrooms and common areas are very spacious and well distributed, thus offering large and comfortable spaces for large groups or different families.

Other things to note
The price includes: the first supply of bed linen and towels; water and gas consumption; electricity consumption up to a maximum of 150.00 kWh per week (the excess will be charged to the tenant at a cost of €0.50 per kWh); pool maintenance. Not included and to be paid upon arrival: the cost of final cleaning, which amounts to €300.00.
Pets allowed upon request for a fee of €50.00/each. Smoking is not allowed in the house.
N.B.: the tap water comes from an artesian well: it is therefore not drinkable but can be used for cooking and hygiene.
