This is a mixed review. First off, this is not a "resort" at all, just a small house (100m2) and a garden. We made the mistake of accepting staying at Peter's house while he was personally present. Assuming there would be enough space to give us privacy so we could work, we made an exception and went for it (we pay more for airbnb places that are entire homes and book them as business trips to guarantee reliable internet as well as privacy as we depend on it for our work online, being an international software engineering consultancy firm and a photographer). However, Peter, while nice and with a lot of stories, interrupted us often, so it was hard to get our work done. It was simply a matter of there not being enough space or a separate office, given that it was us sharing the house with its owner. The house is very overpriced for what it is, especially compared with the next airbnb which happens to be the neighboring listing outside Carhuaz, a Swiss Chalet, that's 3 times a large as Peter's home, with much nicer appliances, a washer inside, and yet cheaper. Larger supermarkets are half an hour away and good quality hiking / mountain running is still half an hour to one hour drive away; we did run out of the place a few times, and at Laguna Parón (2hours away), and in the Parque Nacional Huarascán as well as towards and above Matacoto, in the Cordillera Negra. On the good side, Peter has a beautiful lush garden that's very well taken care of and a large lot, surrounded by walls, so it feels safe. The kitchen is fully equipped, with a stove, so it's possible to make pizza and alike. Above all, the views of Huandoy Mountains are spectacular.
My partner and I greatly enjoyed our four-night stay at Huandoy Resort, and we thought that the house was a great value for the price! As hikers, nowhere else could beat the location - so much closer to the incredible hikes we wanted to do, compared with staying in Huaraz. We did think there were a few things that could be improved for future visitors. First, the good: we were able to communicate our arrival details to Peter ahead of time, and the house caretaker, Rodolfo, picked us up at the Yungay bus station right when we arrived (even though our bus was two hours early, he was waiting right there) and took us to the house in a taxi. Rodolfo also helped arrange taxi transportation for the next few days of hiking in the area with driver Pedro, who drove us each day and apparently works with all guests at the house. We were surprised and touched to find the house was well-stocked with fruit, vegetables, juice/milk, bread, and honey, and even a bottle of wine in advance of our arrival! We enjoyed the view from the incredibly well-cared-for garden, and really liked being in a rural setting only a few minutes' walk from the center of town. There was room for improvement on some things, though: the kitchen and living room were a bit sticky, and we thought it was strange that there was no garbage can anywhere besides one of the bathrooms (and nowhere to throw trash bags out outside). The toilets’ flush valves were broken for our entire visit, which led to our running water not working for several hours on the first day. In order to fix the problem, we had to communicate with Peter (who was in Germany) over Airbnb rather than Rodolfo in Yungay, since when we visited, Rodolfo's phone wasn't working and we were only given his wife's number (which also didn't seem to work for us). And lastly, the hot water was very inconsistent throughout our stay; over the four days, my partner had two lukewarm, one hot, and one cold showers, and I had one hot and three cold showers. Those issues aside, we would certainly recommend this place! The Cordillera Blanca is amazing and the Huandoy Resort is a good value for the money.
