This small wooden eco cabin is perched high on a cliff with breathtaking views over the Caribbean sea. With everything you need, our cabin is built by local craftsmen in the traditional village style amid coastal forest in a protected area rich in birds, plants and wildlife. Many of the furnishings and fittings have been upcycled or recycled. Off-grid for power and water and off the beaten track, this is the perfect place to unwind and appreciate the simpler things in life.

The space
We are an "approved COVID 19 accommodation" listed by the Government of Saint Lucia on its website so you are very welcome to come and stay with us!

Looking for somewhere away from it all?

Built entirely of wood by local artisans, the cabin has been furnished with many upcycled and recycled objects which gives it a unique character. The kitchen sink has been made from an old tyre, the wooden cupboards use recycled wood, the sunshade and cushion covers are made from vintage coffee sacks and the bedcover is made from vintage Hungarian hemp grain sacks - perfect for this climate as this is a natural fibre which can "breathe".

As passionate environmentalists the cabin reflects our deep commitment to minimalist but comfortable living and gives you a chance to experience this high quality of life for yourselves.

Doing all of the cleaning and maintenance work ourselves, you will not be disturbed during your stay with us unless we can be of help or assistance in which case a quick whatsapp message will reach us immediately. The cabin will be thoroughly cleaned before your arrival and hand sanitizer provided. While you are here you will need to wear masks and social distance when you are out and about but we will help you get the most from your stay on the island despite current conditions! During lockdown we have re-varnished and re-painted all surfaces as well as renovating all the sinks. We have also built two beautiful wooden taps to accompany our home made sinks.

With an amazing 200 degree view from the large terrace over the neighbouring coastline and the tops of the trees, you can see the birds and butterflies feeding at the same height as your sunlounger! The two sets of double doors open to create a completely unobstructed view and the modest but tasteful living space incorporates a standard double bed with mosquito net, well equipped kitchen area with gas hob and stove and a small bathroom with WC and hand basin.

On a second deck below the main terrace is a private shower accessed by a short flight of steps and this deck also has a drying area for washing or wet towels. Two barbecues are available for guests to use.

We have chosen to produce our own solar power and we are totally off-grid. In addition, all the water is our own harvested rainwater, double filtered, pure and safe to drink. The water to the shower is heated by passive solar heating through a special hose installed on the roof of the Hangout. The Hangout has its own access to the parking area through a small wooden gate in the fence of the property.

We deliberately do not have a swimming pool. The dangers of swimming in chlorine are now well recognised, especially for anyone with allergies, skin problems or asthma. Salt water pools are not a solution since they simply use salt to generate chlorine and the end result is the same. With two beautiful beaches either side of our house you can swim in a totally natural, chemical free environment whenever you want and enjoy the beauty of the undersea world with its corals, fish and other amazing wildlife. One beach is a secluded cove, 10-15 minutes walk away, usually deserted with excellent snorkelling and the other beach is 10 minutes by car (or you can kayak from Marigot Bay or swim round from the secluded cove) and is a wide sandy beach perfect for swimming and enjoying the waves.

A family of three black labradors lives with us at the top of the property and if you are a dog lover they would love to visit you! We also have five goats which help us to keep the grass down along the roadside! We have just rescued a local horse which was being mistreated. Her name is Ten and she is blind in one eye but wonderfully sweet natured. She grazes on the field below the house and sleeps at night in a stable at the bottom of the steps to our house. She loves meeting guests especially if they offer her a banana! You can see photos of her enjoying swimming on the small beach below our house.

The Hummingbird Hangout is located below the Treehouse which is the only house down a no through road so it is very safe and quiet. Pablo and I are committed environmentalists and our passion for nature drives everything we do. Unlike other guest houses we never use pesticides or insecticides but work with natural pest solutions. A network of 15 fishpools provide an environmental solution to prevent mosquitoes breeding as the fish eat any mosquito larvae and therefore drastically reduce the mosquito population - this is in direct contrast to the common local practice of fogging for mosquitos with a spray made of neurotoxins.

We have planted our garden to encourage birds and other wildlife onto our plot and we have left two thirds of our large property wild as a wildlife sanctuary. We are also planting many native plants such as orchids and air plants in our plot which have been rescued from development areas in order to protect them from extinction.

We love using driftwood, corals, shells and other items collected from the beaches around the house. We also make our own glasses from bottles left behind by our guests as well as calabash bowls, as used by the local people in daily life.

We have inherited a commercial ice cream maker and as Pablo loves ice cream we always have a selection of homemade ice creams available which we invite guests to share if they wish. We just ask a small fee to cover ingredient costs and work on an honesty box principle where you settle for what you have consumed when you leave. They have proved very popular! We are also now making rum and banana bread and banana rum. We also keep local beers for sale at cost price.

We take our guests' privacy very seriously and not only do we give them "space" while they are living on our property but we do all our cleaning and maintenance ourselves so that they are not disturbed by on-site staff. We also do not mark the way to our property with signs down the roads as the more commercial guest houses do since we really consider our guests are visiting our private home and we treat them as our private guests.

We have partnered with local Saint Lucians to design a series of private land and sea tours which are not on any tourist "programme". These are focused on local experiences and off the beaten track adventures. We also have a special agreement with the watersports shop in Marigot Bay for the hire of watersports equipment - a special very reasonable package has been agreed for our guests. All of these experiences are arranged directly with local people, not tour agents, and are described in the information sheet which we send out to our guests once they have booked with us.

Also available for hire if you book it early enough is our spare car, a small 4x4 Suzuki Jimny which is ideal for the road conditions here. Let us know if you want more details.

Fifteen minutes walk down the private road will bring you to a small secluded cove where you can swim or snorkel among coral reefs. In twenty minutes you will be down in Marigot Bay with its cafes, restaurants and marina life, bank, minimarket and ATM.

Please check with us before booking to know if any COVID 19 restrictions are in force which might affect your stay.

Where you’ll be

Marigot Bay, St Lucia

Marigot Bay is the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean. It has top quality restaurants and facilities and is a great centre for exploring the island as you can go both north or south with ease. We are located one bay away from the main bay itself which means we benefit from the facilities while enjoying our own peace and quiet!

Pablo and I are passionate about the environment and when we decided to settle in Saint Lucia we made sure that we were in the most beautiful spot possible! We have worked all our lives in renewable energies and environmental conservation and this commitment runs through everything we do here. We have built the houses looking directly at the sunset and moonset in a place where they cannot be spoilt by new developments. We have protected the wildlife on the cliff below the houses so that we have an abundance of birds and other creatures. We are off-grid for energy (solar) and water so not affected by any local shortages or cuts. Each apartment is designed for maximum enjoyment of the outdoors and stunning views. Our love for animals means that we have surrounded ourselves with goats, dogs and a rescued horse. We live in wonderful harmony with frogs, lizards, birds, hermit crabs, mongooses, possums and many more. Unlike other local rentals, we use local wood as well as upcycled materials (pallet wood, driftwood, etc) to furnish and fit out our apartments. We never use pesticides or insecticides but use natural methods to reduce pests (for example we use fish ponds to reduce mosquitoes which have been very successful). We also work directly in partnership with local people who want to help our guests discover their beautiful island. We do not do it ourselves as we would not be able to offer you the same insights and we do not go through tour agencies. These are local people we have met while living on the island.
