Eco Hale (ha-lay) is a clean, cozy, comfortable cottage studio: ensuite layout with separate enclosed indoor bathroom and Japanese Soaking Tub on the covered deck. Accommodates no more than 2 INTREPID travelers or the Solo adventurer.

-Your retreat is surrounded by lush manicured native vegetation providing a sense of closeness to our natural ecosystem, seclusion, privacy and magic. Windows are positioned to allow the surrounding rain forest view and morning sun rise/evening glow to light and enhance your stay. A chorus of birdsong announces the day and the soft chant of frogs serenade the night. Hawaiian rains provide the comforting patter upon the roof.

-Delight in a small footprint designed and furnished with special comforts; sustainable bamboo flooring, custom tile work, re-purposed materials and lots of personality.

-On demand H2O provides hot showers. Please see the reviews. Clean energy, Solar Panels and Battery Storage provide electrical power and allow us to use very little energy generated by fossil fuels.

-OFuro, the Hot Soaking Tub on the expanded covered deck is 'zen' like providing a sensual pleasure and a feeling of well being and harmony with Hawaii's spiritual landscape. Review Guidelines for use.

-Wet-bar kitchenette includes microwave, cooking utensils and dishes, coffee press, ice cooler and a 3.5 cu.ft. mini-fridge.

-Complimentary coffee, tea, island fruits, fresh baked banana bread, juices & granola. Basic oil, shoyu and hot sauce. We purposefully stock sparingly due to the coronavirus.

-We provide a Complimentary First Night light Pupu/snack in the privacy of Eco Hale to make the beginning of your moments here 'extra special'. Please request.

-The Breakfast bar is on the covered deck. You can cook with a gas burner or microwave.

-Umbrellas, flashlights and binoculars are provided for your use on property and during your early morning or late night adventures.

-Save on rental equipment! Our boogie boards, cooler and beach chairs, are a great "grab-and-go" feature. You will need to bring your personal snorkel equipment.

-Minimum Reservation is 6 nights. Our commitment is to a Small Footprint, exceptional Cleanliness & Safety and immersive Hawaii. Hence, fewer guests with longer stays. Our Very BEST RATES are for 7 nights or 30 days.

Guest access
This 1 acre slice of Paradise is located 1/2 way between Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and historic Hilo town; 20 miles either way. Our rural neighborhood is designed on one acre lots in upper Puna with access 5 miles off Hwy 11, asphalt 1 and 2 lane entry roads and graveled roads This is an option for eco-travelers, trekkers, hikers, glampers and gampers. Farmers markets weekly and weekends: Kea'au Village Farmers Market-Mon thru Sun, Makuu Farmers Market Sundays in Pahoa, Hilo Farmers Market-Mon thru Sun and Volcano Village Market Sundays.

Keep in mind the Island of Hawaii is LARGER than all of the other islands COMBINED; plan your arrival and adventures with this consideration.

Location

Mountain View, Hawaii, United States

The Puna district is a huge triangle area encompassing territory between Hilo, Volcano, Pahoa and Kalapana. We are in UPPER PUNA and were not affected by 2018 lava flows. View new lava fields by air or by hiking to our newest black sand beach, Pohoiki.
The area also contains the largest relatively untouched Ohia forests in the islands, currently being threatened by Rapid Ohia Death. This is a unique area and is relatively undeveloped maintaining it's origin. Agriculture is still a large part of the subsistence economy. We are located close enough to Hilo, Kea'au and Volcano Village for provisions and dining but still a world away from the fast track at the resorts.
Due to COVID19, we recommend you pre-check access & availability for all venues.
-Historical Hilo town offers museums, tours, local peeps, markets, craft fairs, Queen Liliokalani Park, zoo, arboritium, caves, gold course, art and local grinds/foods.
-Locals Beach Parks: In Keaukaha=Onekahakaha, Carlsmith, Richardson, Lokoaka Wilderness, Leleiwi, Black Sands in Naalehu, Green Sands/Papakolea at South Point
-Snorkel: Kepo'okalani, Kumukahi, Keaukaha area.
-Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
-AND a long list of trails, hikes, botanical gardens, parks, waterfalls and of course, lava. The previous are East Hawaii accessible for one-day adventures returning leisurely to the comforts of Eco Hale.
-North, South and West Hawaii areas offer adventures for deeper immersion with appropriate planning.
-Maps provided.

"A commitment to a small sustainable foot print and the security and health of our Guests and our community", we strive to make Eco Hale as much an experience as it is a destination. In February 2020, we increased the amount of vacancy time between reservations so that we may maintain our cleaning and disinfecting standards, regulate a moderate traffic flow and offer additional Peace of Mind. Please check Hawaii Islands Quarantine Requirements. KAEO is an enthusiastic gardener, occasional travel agent, sometimes Hula Girl, Hawaii born, ambassador to the culture, Elder caregiver and sometimes 'pretty good cook'. She has lived on Oahu, Maui and now the best, the Island of Hawaii. I've hiked hundreds of miles on ALL the islands: Mauna Loa, Waimanu, Polipoli, Waihee, Wailau, Hauula, the Koolaus & Wainae Mountains. A kayak trip to Kalalau circumvented the difficult 10.8m hike. KARL is a master tile setter and works on all phases of the Carpentry, Remodel and Building Industry. He built Eco Hale; we estimate using at least 60% re-purposed materials. This was our original master bedroom suite. Karl comes from a family that simply needs their toothbrush when someone announces "Road Trip". Our romance began on the island of Maui and our adventure, commitment and curiosity to/for one another continues. We love the entrepreneurial, independent alternative lifestyle and very much enjoy sharing our slice of paradise in the rain forest. Our lives have been enriched by the many guests from around the world who enjoy privacy and nature. Come see us. "Pack light and bring your sense of wonder." "Not all those who wander are lost."
