Unique hand built cob cottage next to lg. pond w water feature. Lg. fenced and gated yard. Gentle, curving space-made from sand, straw, water and earth . Featured in multiple international publications. The floor is also earthen clay with added radiant heat. Beautiful natural light. It's truly a magical place.

The space

It's a curvilinear earthen structure hand sculpted from water, sand, straw, and clay earth. It features a radial roof with a central pagoda-like skylight. When building the Cob, we used reclaimed and natural materials when ever possible. The insulation in the ceiling is made from pulverized reclaimed blue jeans and the floor is made from the same earthen clay. It has a Dutch door, so you can open the top part for additional ventilation. There are 33 blue bottles sculpted into different parts of the walls to create "blue windows". But if you try to count them you won't find that many. Some ended up getting covered up because, well, there was just a little TOO much blue. It also has air conditioning and a radiant heat floor. The bed is a double and the bathroom and additional kitchenette access are located in the main house outside of the cob cottage. The main house is about 40 steps away. NOTE: Starting October 16th, the Cob Cottage will also include access to a full kitchen + living room area, and the bath will be shared with two additional Airbnb units.

Guest access

The bathroom is located outside of the cob cottage and inside the main house. It's about 40 steps away from the cottage and up 3 stairs to the back deck . Inside the house is a private sitting room with a big leather couch ,a kitchenette with a small fridge, microwave, and electric tea kettle. Complimentary coffee and tea provided. The bathroom includes a clawfoot tub and shower. NOTE: Starting October 16th, the Cob Cottage will also include access to a full kitchen + living room area, and the bath will be shared with two additional Airbnb units.

Had a nice, cozy stay at the cob cottage. Great place to visit if interested in natural homes. Backyard has a pond and they have such adorable cats! Would do it all over again for sure!

To start, I should say that we stayed here before the bathroom and kitchenette became a shared space with another rental on the property. Just as a personal preference, we would not have opted to stay here if it were set up as a communal bathroom, but maybe that's just us. That being said, this backyard oasis was pretty magical and like nothing else we had ever experienced. Such a special space! My wife was dying over what she called the "Hobbit Dutch Door" that is now on her homeowner's wishlist. The property was in a great neighborhood with plenty of parking where we were easily able to walk to brunch and back through the charming streets. We especially enjoyed the resident felines who were oh-so-sweet and loved a good tummy scritchin' (we're suckers for a kitty!) The one thing I will say, if you are a light-sensitive sleeper, a sleeping mask is a must. Due to the unique design of the Cob Cottage, there's a lot of bright light that comes in. This would not dissuade us from staying here again, but my wife was very glad she had remembered to pack hers.

The cottage was really cozy! The heated floors were definitely a plus, especially when the cold weather rolled through at night. Having the bathroom in a separate building wasn't as bad some have previously reviewed. Overall, I enjoyed my stay, and would definitely consider the cottage should I visit Portland again!

We have lived in our beautiful Old Portland home for nearly 25 years now. As artists, musicians, and coffee shop owners, we’ve been a part of Portland’s transformation into one of the most dynamic and colorful cities in America. Our SE Portland neighborhood was voted one of the most livable in the country a couple years back- I guess if you stick around long enough something interesting is bound to happen… we are fortunate to have a double lot complete with a large koi pond stocked exclusively with goldfish, keeping the raccoons, herons, and our four cats well fed and entertained.
