Where you’ll be

Strangford, Co Down, United Kingdom

This is a quiet fishing village which immediately creates a feeling of tranquility and relaxation. The locals are friendly and take a pride in their village. There are scenic walks, and great cycling in the local Castleward estate. The beaches are clean with beautiful views over the Strangford Lough and the ferry trip to Portaferry is always s delight. There are local attractions there such as Explores aquarium and lovely art galleries bars and restaurants. There is a regular ferry running between Strangford and Portaferry.
The historical town of Downpatrick is also just 10 mins by car/bus and 30mins to the holiday resort of Newcastle and beautiful Tullymore forest park and mountains of Mourne.
Belfast city is just 40 mins away by car.
Strangford village benefits from popular bars, restaurants and mini supermarkets, one of which has a renowned butcher.
The Cuan Restaraunt has recently been refurbished. Hopefully it still has one of the now famous doors from Game of Thrones. It is not unusual to see enthusiasts touring the village and Castleward. Strangford has become a popular village for film and tv producers and scenes for a Disney film
were shot in Castle street in 2016.
The film, “The bookshop” ****(see photos) was filmed in Strangford and one of the scenes was shot at our front (red) door.

******The Bookshop is a 2017 drama film written and directed by Isabel Coixet, based on the 1978 novel of the same name by Penelope Fitzgerald, in which the lead character attempts against opposition to open a bookshop in the coastal town of Hardborough, Suffolk.

More recently “Bloodlands”Produced by Line of Duty and Bodyguard’s Jed Mercurio, Northern Ireland-based police drama Bloodlands was written and created by Chris Brandon, who comes from County Down and famous opening scene of car raised out of the water, was shot on the harbour in Strangford village.

The local newsagents sells a great variety of goods including plants toys, gifts eg Game of Thrones Tshirts, ice creams etc. It is just 7doors away from this property and a hairdressers 3 doors away.
The stunning "Ulster Way" walk is accessed at the top of castle street.
A truly stunning village with all that is needed for a perfect break.

Hi we are Berny and John joint hosts of, “Castle Street Gem.” Most of the communication and managing your stay goes through me but it is John who will meet and greet you at the property upon your arrival. We purchased this property in 2008 as a holiday home for our family and totally remodelled it inside. Since our children moved away from home for University we weren’t getting the same usage out of the property so we decided it might be nice to share it. John has had the outhouse restored in 2020 to a utility area for the convenience of our guests. He also designed the raised patio area and garden with private parking for one vehicle. Our family love Strangford for many reasons. It is a picture postcard beautiful village and has its own little microcosm of weather, making it usually sunnier than where we live, in Belfast. The surrounding area is also great with lots of beaches and places to visit with a range of activities. Strangford lough is an area of outstanding beauty. We love hosting as it's an opportunity not only to meet like minded people who love travelling, It’s also that it’s great to share our little gem of a holiday home. I love photography and have taken a number of local shots here for you to view. Nothing is any trouble so don’t hesitate to contact us at any time either in advance of or during your stay. Your comfort and enjoyment of your stay at Castle Street Gem is our priority. Thank you, John and Berny
