Fancy spending a unique few days or even weeks in a picturesque 400-year-old farmhouse situated in the peaceful village core of quaint Gharghur? Would you like to travel back in time for a romantic break, or to get away from today's rushed life? This is now possible with the careful restoration of a room that in the past served as the farmer's main living area. To make it even more enticing, it comes with a/c and also ample free parking space in the centuries-old streets that surround the area.

The space
For the traveller that is not content with run-of-the-mill accommodation but would like to savour Maltese history and see how it must have been to live in a typical village farmhouse hundreds of years back; this while still being physically close to all that the island has to offer nowadays!

The spacious room enjoys the same basic facilities one has come to expect from today's accommodation, such as a comfortable bed, complete with a semi-orthopaedic mattress and plush pillows, together with recently installed air conditioning, a sizeable dining area, tea/coffee making facilities, a fridge, crockery/cutlery, a small library (including a number of Malta travel guides), etc.

More importantly, the room has the added benefit of being totally cut off from the rest of this scenic farmhouse, thus affording lots of privacy sadly lacking in most accommodation options of this type nowadays. Furthermore, you are assured of our undivided attention during your stay since we only accept one couple (or individual) at any given time.

The farmhouse itself is a labour of love and has been meticulously restored to offer a unique experience that will definitely not disappoint! We tried our best to keep true to the original features without overly modernising the place in order to maintain its unique charm. Unfortunately, places similar to ours are sometimes spoilt with conversions of the sort where walls are inexplicably whitewashed and gypsum walls + modern tiles installed, thus destroying the original beauty of such unique buildings from another era.

So... if you:
- would like to be hosted by a welcoming Maltese family that is well-versed in the islands customs, history and traditions;
- are looking for an off-the-beaten-track experience;
- to unwind in rural settings that stood the test of time;
- to be immersed in nature, or;
- simply searching for a secluded romantic getaway...

...then this is definitely the place for you! :)

Guest access
Apart from the spacious air-conditioned room which is totally cut off from the main house, guests have their own private restroom/shower facilities across the patio and can also make use of a sizeable attractive central courtyard/garden that is brimming with flowering plants and bushes for most of the year. There is also a mature, decades-old olive tree that provides some welcome shade during the hot summer months.

The room is large enough to accommodate a good-sized dining table with chairs and comes equipped with air conditioning/heating, a small refrigerator, together with coffee and tea making facilities, plus other basic essentials such as crockery and cutlery - all commodities that are hard to come by when opting to book a stay in a private room in Malta/Gozo (as opposed to renting out a whole house or apartment).

One can also relax in the piano room as soon as you enter the farmhouse (popular with our guests in the summer months since it keeps very cool even during this time). Both the rooms and garden create a wonderful setting for our guests to enjoy breakfast or any other meal of the day in-house should they so wish!

Other things to note
The setting of this peaceful and serene farmhouse is a rare find and truly unique. It is still very close to most of the attractions Malta has to offer and yet situated in a very quiet neighbourhood, away from the more well-known, densely populated tourist areas. The room itself is rather unusual in construction and larger than the typical double room, making it quite spacious to accommodate an additional bed should there be the need. An open landing just outside the entrance to the private room makes it the perfect setting to relax, lap up the sun and enjoy a bird's eye view of the lovely, colourful garden beneath.

Apart from the usual amenities one has come to expect when booking this type of stay, little things like free use of a strong WiFi signal, efficient air conditioning, a small fridge, kettle, coffee maker, coffee, tea, sugar, free use of beach towels, etc make it the ideal place to book a romantic and relaxing break that will not disappoint.

Our very gentle sweet-natured tabby cat, Tikka, has its unofficial living quarters under the arches facing the garden and spends most of its time lapping the sun on its favourite chair. It has also been trained not to venture inside the guest room, meaning our guests have the benefit of choosing whether to interact with her or not.

The farmhouse itself is conveniently located in the village centre, close to the church where most of the activity takes place, yet tucked away peacefully in a secluded alley away from the inevitable din that the various bars and other eateries may generate. Free ample parking space is available in the church square and surrounding streets. Moreover, every morning our guests wake up to the inviting mouthwatering aroma of delicious freshly-baked Maltese bread which is lovingly prepared by the baker manning the centuries-old bakery a few metres down from our place. It is difficult to resist not buying some to have for breakfast or brunch in the morn.

Last but not least, one gets the added bonus of being hosted by experienced hosts who have a genuine, intimate knowledge of local places, different cuisine, culture, history & traditions. More importantly, we are always at hand to help out with tailor-made suggestions and useful tips for the particular tastes and interests our varied guests from different walks of life may have when visiting our islands - this without a doubt should enhance your holiday, while saving you precious time and hard-earned money. Try us out and we promise to go out of our way to make your Malta experience a truly memorable one! ☺

Ħal Għargħur, Malta

The farmhouse is located in the ancient village core of peaceful Gharghur. It is primarily a very idyllic and welcoming residential area with narrow winding streets and the right mix of village folk and high-end professionals who prefer living away from the hectic life noisy cities usually have to offer.

Amongst other things, one can find a quaint little Wine Bar and Bistro round the corner, a handful of surprisingly exquisite restaurants and pizzerias, a traditional Maltese bakery a couple of paces down the street, together with other tiny food outlets such as a green grocer, mini market and a conveniently located store selling all sort of food and every day needs that is open from six in the morning till nine o'clock in the evening, Monday-Sunday. For those who would like to really immerse themselves in local village life, the local band club situated opposite the church, two minutes away from us, also offers breakfast from as little as two euro per person. Guests can also avail themselves of a newly-installed ATM two blocks away.

We are situated a stone's throw away from one of Malta's most picturesque valleys and a very short walk from one of the island's most scenic view points - the 'Top of the World' belvedere that gives one an outstanding view of the north of the island, together with the islands of Comino and Gozo. On a clear day one may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Sicily and the iconic Mount Etna Volcano. One can also admire some historic artefacts such as the idyllic Victoria Lines, a romantic picture-perfect chapel popular for weddings, go for a morning jog along the scenic route and also enjoy mingling with the very friendly locals.

During your stay
We are a very down-to-earth Maltese family that go out of their way to make our guests feel welcome without impinging on their privacy. The actual setup of our historic farmhouse more than allows for this, since the guest quarters are completely cut off from the main house, therefore allowing guests the benefit of both privacy and the warmth expected by a host.

Both my husband and I have been hosting guests for a number of years now and consider ourselves very knowledgeable about Malta's history, culture and general way of life. Moreover, we are very in-tune with what different guests look out for when they visit our sunny islands and therefore find it easy to dish out practical tips to enhance our guests' holiday break. By doing so, we help our guests avoid the hassle of having to decide what is worth a visit in the limited time at their disposition. The reviews on our page more than attest to this. We are also available to help guests plan their stay down to the last detail if they require any help with their itinerary.

Please feel free to browse and send us any enquiry you may have. We will be more than glad to guide you in the best way possible.
