This article provides specific information about local laws that apply to hosts in Kassel. Just like our country article for Germany, it’s your responsibility to verify and comply with any obligations that apply to you as a host. This article can serve as a starting point or place you can come back to if you have questions but it isn’t exhaustive and it doesn’t constitute legal or tax advice. It’s a good idea to check to make sure laws and procedures are current.
Please contact the city of Kassel directly or consult a local advisor, such as an attorney or tax professional, if you have questions.
The city of Kassel has been collecting since July 1, 2025 an accommodation tax. The tourism tax amounts to 5% of the net accommodation fee for non-local persons in the city of Kassel. It applies to both private and business overnight stays. As a host you are liable for tax and responsible for collecting the accommodation tax. You can find here the full accommodation tax by-law (Übernachtungssteuersatzung).
Please note that you need to notify your accommodation to the City. You can register your accommodation online here. In the event of cessation of business operations or a change of operator, you need to deregister or re-register the accommodation business.
Overnight stays by non-resident persons that exceed a total duration of 28 days per calendar year within the city area of Kassel are exempt from the accommodation tax.
You can find the full list of exemptions in the ordinance.
After registering your accommodation, you will receive a tax or debtor number by mail from the city of Kassel. You are required to submit a declaration to the city of Kassel regarding the number of overnight stays and the net accommodation charges. This declaration must be submitted to the city of Kassel by the 15th day after the end of each calendar quarter. Starting from October 1, 2025, the tax declaration can be submitted either
a) digitally here or
b) using the officially prescribed form.
